Dunkerque vs Standard Liege

Dunkerque handed Standard Liège their first defeat of pre-season with a dominant first-half display, Thomas Robinet and Victor Mayela scoring within four minutes to seal a 2-0 win at Stade Marcel Rosseel in Loon-Plage on Saturday.

How it unfolded

Playing in a 3-5-2 shape under coach Vincent Euvrard, Standard had won their three previous friendlies — against Verlaine (7-0), Aubel (4-0) and Francs Borains (1-0) — but faced a step up in opposition against a Dunkerque side that finished 10th in Ligue 2 last season.

Standard started brightly and Abid should have scored in the second minute, but the Rouches faded after the opening 10 minutes. Dunkerque, organised in a 4-3-3, took control of midfield and created several chances before breaking through.

Thomas Robinet opened the scoring in the 30th minute with a superb strike after Standard's defence failed to clear a cross into the box. Three minutes later, defender Victor Mayela doubled the lead with a header from a corner, making it 2-0 after 33 minutes.

Dunkerque continued to create chances before half-time and could have added a third. Standard offered little in attack during the first period, with Euvrard admitting afterwards: "We lost control after 20 minutes and were too passive at times."

Second half and red card

Lawrence and Nsimba were replaced at half-time by Drammeh and Nguene. Euvrard made eight further changes in the 63rd minute, introducing new signings Salieu Drammeh, Alexis Trouillet and Dimitri Lavalée. Trouillet's brilliant through ball to Nguene in the 76th minute created Standard's best chance, but the finish was lacking.

Dunkerque substitute Lenny Dziki was sent off in the 83rd minute for a last-man foul, receiving a straight red card. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Dunkerque held firm and nearly added a third when a shot cannoned off the left post in the 79th minute.

"We were too passive and conceded too much," Euvrard told DH Les Sports+. "But in pre-season you have to go through all the stages. It was an interesting match."

The turning point

Standard's passive response to Robinet's opener proved decisive. Conceding a second goal just three minutes later — before the Belgian side could regroup — effectively ended the contest before half-time. Dunkerque's intensity in the press and speed in transition was a level above what Standard had faced in their earlier friendlies against lower-tier opposition.

Key performers

Thomas Robinet (Dunkerque) — Took his goal superbly and led the line effectively, dropping deep to link play. The Ligue 2 forward was a constant threat.

Victor Mayela (Dunkerque) — Rose highest to head home from a corner for the second goal and caused problems for Standard's back three with his movement.

Salieu Drammeh (Standard Liège) — The new signing from Norway, wearing the number 8 shirt, showed promising pace and technical quality after coming on at half-time. "He should please the Sclessin crowd," noted DH Les Sports+.

Belmin Dizdarevic (Standard Liège) — Made several saves to keep the scoreline respectable before being replaced by Pirard at half-time.

By the numbers

Dunkerque registered 13 total shots and 6 on target (LiveFoot data); Standard managed 8 shots with only 2 on target. Possession was split evenly at 50% each, but Dunkerque carried the greater attacking threat throughout. The hosts' 34 dangerous attacks to Standard's 40 (LiveFoot) understates the control Dunkerque exerted in the first half. Standard's only period of pressure came after the 63rd-minute substitutions.

What it means

Standard suffer their first setback of pre-season after three wins. The Belgian Pro League side face a glamour friendly against Juventus at Sclessin on 25 July before opening their league campaign at home to Cercle Brugge on 8 August. Dunkerque continue their Ligue 2 preparations with another friendly against Samsunspor on 22 July. Note: Standard were without Nielsen and Fossey, who missed the match through illness.

Verdict

A deserved win for Dunkerque, who were sharper, hungrier and more organised than a Standard side still finding its rhythm under Euvrard. "We suffered too much," the coach conceded. The arrivals of Trouillet, Lavalée and Drammeh in the second half offered glimpses of Standard's potential, but the first-half performance underlined how much work remains before the Pro League opener.
