Aldershot Town vs Oxford United

Aldershot looked the sharper side in the opening 20 minutes, sitting deeper into pre-season, and deserved their lead through Oshilaja. But the two goals in 120 seconds from Emakhu and O'Donkor flipped the momentum entirely. Oxford's high press forced errors — both goals stemmed from winning the ball in advanced areas — and Aldershot never regained control.

Aldershot manager Scott Davies was blunt in his assessment post-match: "The three goals, as we know, we've just spoken about it as a group there, absolute gifts. We give the ball away twice as the centre half, and then we have a collision with the centre half and the keeper, and that's the three goals."

Gatlin O'Donkor — scored the decisive second goal with a striker's instinct, chasing down a lost cause and finishing under pressure. Also drew a sharp save early in the second half with a strike that went into the side-netting.

Aidomo Emakhu — the Irish winger was in the right place at the right time for the equaliser, showing composure to finish from Roosken's cutback.

Jeon Jin-Woo — the South Korean announced himself with a well-taken solo goal, demonstrating pace and composure. He had earlier forced a flying save from Hayes before finding the net.

Ruben Roosken — the architect of the equaliser, winning the ball high and creating the chance from nothing.

Oxford's 3-1 scoreline slightly flattered the control they exerted. The first 20 minutes belonged to Aldershot, who created a couple of half-chances before scoring. But the two quickfire goals — one minute apart — reflected a pattern that would define the game: Oxford's press forced errors in the Aldershot defensive third, and the visitors capitalised ruthlessly. The second-half changes broke the rhythm, but the second XI still created clear chances — Harris forced a save, Snowden curled one requiring a fingertip stop, and Jin-Woo scored. Aldershot's shot count was limited largely to long-range efforts, with Oxford's deeper defensive structure giving little away.

This was Ramsey's first match in charge since taking over at Oxford United, following a pre-season training camp in Spain. The U's are preparing for their League One campaign after relegation from the Championship last season. They travel to Barnet on Saturday 25 July for their next friendly. Aldershot, who are further into their pre-season schedule, host Hanwell Town on Saturday before a trip to Braintree Town on 1 August.

A controlled, professional start for Ramsey. The first XI showed sharpness in the high press that undid Aldershot, while the second XI maintained the level. The three goals from defensive errors are a concern for Aldershot but a positive sign of Oxford's attacking intent. Plenty of work remains, but the template is clear.
