The first half offered little in the way of goalmouth action, with Neil Gibson later admitting his Altrincham side were "a bit sloppy" and "off our intensity levels for our pressing" during the opening 45 minutes. Altrincham's best reply came through substitute Charlie Kirk, who capitalised on another loose ball inside the penalty area and drove a shot towards the near post, only to see his effort clip the top of the crossbar and land in the Frank Powell stand.

There was no single decisive moment in a game defined by its absence of goals. Both sides used the fixture primarily for fitness — Gibson made clear afterwards that giving players minutes was the priority. "Pre-season is something where we're trying to get as much out of it as we can," he told Alty TV. "We know that it's frustrating at times. We've had a little bit of a broken pre-season, obviously, with last week." The game's pattern was set early: solid defensive organisation from both teams, limited creative spark in the final third, and a reliance on set-pieces and loose balls for the few openings that materialised.

Altrincham (National League) have now played three pre-season games, though one at Wythenshawe Town was abandoned and another at Vauxhall Motors was cancelled. The Robins host Macclesfield at the J. Davidson Stadium on Saturday 25 July (3pm) in their first home friendly of the summer.

A predictable pre-season goalless draw in which fitness was the priority and goals were never likely. Chorley will be encouraged by Taylor's lively cameo, while Gibson will want more sharpness in the final third before the competitive season starts on 8 August against Southend United. Both managers got what they needed: minutes in the tank, no injuries, and a clean sheet.
