Tavares' 23rd-minute strike was the decisive moment of a tight contest. The goal came during a sustained spell of Rotherham pressure — five chances created in the ten minutes before and after the opener — and gave Bruce's side a platform to manage the game through a disjointed second half.

Bruce made wholesale changes at the break, introducing trialists across the pitch and giving minutes to academy players. Alfreton grew into the second period but could not find a way through. Dean Garner chased a long ball down well in the second half and forced the Alfreton goalkeeper into a save with his feet. Late on, Lewis Clarke cleared behind for a corner with an Alfreton forward closing in, and the resulting set-piece was headed away before the linesman flagged for offside.

Fábio Tavares — The Portuguese forward scored his first goal for the club and was a constant menace. Bruce described him as "a live wire" whose "attitude and application has been great in pre-season." Tavares had several sighters before the goal and linked well with Jellis throughout the first half.

Jamie Jellis — The midfielder created the two best chances before the goal and came closest to doubling the lead with a dipping effort that cleared the bar by inches. His set-piece delivery was a consistent threat.

Manny Adegboyega — The Irish defender anchored the backline well during a first half where Rotherham largely controlled territory, and he went close from a Jellis free-kick.

The 1-0 scoreline reflected a narrow but deserved Rotherham win. The Millers generated the bulk of their chances in a dominant first-half spell between the 20th and 35th minutes, creating five openings. The second half was a more fragmented affair with ten substitutions across both sides, explaining the drop in attacking output. Alfreton's best moment came late when Lewis Clarke had to clear off the line, but the hosts never seriously threatened an equaliser.

Attendance was 399 at North Street.

Rotherham continue their pre-season build-up unbeaten in four friendlies since the start of July (W2 D2), following the Parkgate win and draws with AFC Emley and Matlock Town. The result gives Bruce his first win in two outings after the Matlock draw, with the performance matching the result for the first hour.

Alfreton, of the National League North, have now lost four of their five pre-season fixtures (D1 L4) and conceded at least once in every game this summer.
