Boreham Wood vs Tottenham Hotspur U21

Tottenham's young side took the lead against the run of play on 33 minutes when Republic of Ireland youth international Mason Melia fired home from close range, having been denied by Boreham Wood goalkeeper Luca Gunter earlier in the half.

The home side had controlled the opening period. Zak Brunt shot narrowly wide inside four minutes, Regan Booty was off target on seven, and Abdul Abdulmalik forced Spurs keeper Carey Bloedorn into two good saves with mazy runs down the left flank. Lewis Richardson also saw a fierce effort superbly saved by Bloedorn just before the interval.

Boreham Wood needed just 15 seconds of the second half to draw level. Richardson raced onto a ball in behind the Spurs defence and saw his deflected shot find the net — a goal his performance had merited. He nearly added a second a minute later, only for Bloedorn to deny him again.

Manager Luke Garrard made six substitutions around the hour mark, and the changes paid immediate dividends. On 70 minutes, substitute Marley Marshall-Miranda fed Luke Norris, whose first-time shot was initially saved by Spurs replacement goalkeeper Sam Archer. From the resulting corner, Norris finished well to give Wood the lead.

Norris turned provider three minutes later, playing in Marshall-Miranda, but Archer saved well. Tarryn Allarakhia struck the outside of the post on 80 minutes as Wood pressed for a third.

Richardson's equaliser 15 seconds into the second half. Garrard said afterwards his side "didn't play in behind what was presented enough first half," but a sharp ball over the top within a minute of the restart unlocked the Spurs defence and changed the game's entire complexion. The goal forced Tottenham's high defensive line to sit deeper, and Wood's six-man substitution wave at 60 minutes maintained the momentum.

Abdul Abdulmalik — Named man of the match by the Boreham Wood media team. Caused constant problems down the left with his direct running, forcing Bloedorn into two excellent first-half saves and drawing fouls that relieved pressure.

Lewis Richardson — Scored the equaliser and was a constant threat. Garrard noted he "got the goal his performance deserved." Had three further chances in the second half before being substituted.

Luke Norris — Came off the bench to score the winner and could have had more. Garrard joked he "probably could have walked the ball into the back of the net" instead of shooting first time from Allarakhia's pass.

Mason Melia — Spurs' standout. The 18-year-old Irish forward scored the opener and tested Gunter early. His movement off the last defender caused problems all evening.

The half-time scoreline (0-1) flattered Spurs. Boreham Wood registered the bulk of meaningful chances across both halves — Richardson alone had four clear sights of goal. The six substitutions Garrard introduced at 60 minutes were decisive: Norris and Marshall-Miranda combined for the winner within 10 minutes of entering the pitch. Spurs' high defensive line, praised by Garrard as "aggressive" in their pressing, was exposed once Wood found the right pass in behind.

Boreham Wood made it three wins from four pre-season outings (2-1 vs Watford, 8-2 vs Real Bedford, 1-1 vs Arsenal U21, 2-1 vs Spurs U21). The side heads to Barnstaple for a week-long training camp before facing Dagenham & Redbridge away on 28 July. The National League season opens at home to Tamworth on 8 August.

For Tottenham's U21s, this was their fourth pre-season fixture. Wayne Burnett's side continue their schedule at Hornchurch on 25 July, followed by a trip to Enfield Town on 4 August.

A deserved win for Boreham Wood against a technically sharp Spurs side. The second-half response — equalising within 15 seconds of the restart, then managing the game through a wave of substitutes — showed squad depth and tactical flexibility. Garrard's side look well placed for the National League opener in three weeks.
