Josue Santo then headed just wide from a corner at close range. A final corner deep in stoppage time caused a scramble in the box, but the ball ended up safely in the goalkeeper's arms.

The handball penalty in the 35th minute was the defining moment. Until then, Bonner had been the side with more territorial control and had created the better chances. The penalty gave Kaiserslautern II a lead they never looked like relinquishing. Bonner's response was energetic but lacked precision in the final third — a pattern that has troubled them in recent friendlies.

Bonner coach Björn Mehnert was candid after the match. "That we are still missing some things, my coaching team and I are aware of," he told the General-Anzeiger Bonn. "After the drinks break we lost the thread. In the second half we mostly had control, but unfortunately we didn't use the few chances."

A deserved win for the hosts, built on defensive discipline and a single moment of set-piece fortune. For Bonner, the performance was respectable — they controlled large stretches — but the lack of a cutting edge is a worry with the real campaign one week away.
