FSV Mainz 05 vs Holstein Kiel

Mainz took the lead in the 14th minute when Holstein Kiel played themselves into trouble in their own half. Phillip Tietz was the beneficiary, finishing calmly to make it 1-0.

The second goal followed a similar pattern. Königsdörffer, signed from Hamburger SV this summer, capitalised on another Kiel error in the 31st minute and slotted home to make it 2-0 at the break.

Kiel created several chances after the interval — Phil Harres missed the most notable opportunities — but could not find a way past the Mainz defence. At the other end, Bøving put the result beyond doubt with a well-taken lobbed finish after Lennard Maloney's through ball.

Kiel goalkeeper Lio Rothenhagen prevented a heavier defeat with two excellent saves in the second period.

Königsdörffer's 31st-minute goal effectively ended the contest before half-time. Coming so soon after the opener and from another Kiel defensive lapse, it forced Holstein to chase the game in the second period — a task that left them exposed at the back.

The 3-0 scoreline reflects Mainz's clinical edge rather than total dominance. Kiel created chances of their own — particularly through Harres after the break — but were undone by two avoidable errors in the first half-hour. The match, played over 100 minutes (2×50), gave both managers ample opportunity to rotate. For Holstein Kiel, this was their second pre-season defeat. Coach Tim Walter will have been encouraged by spells of possession and the chances his side created, but the defensive lapses that gifted Mainz two first-half goals will be a concern. Kiel's next test comes on Wednesday (28 July) away at TSG Hoffenheim.

A straightforward pre-season win for Mainz, who were clinical where it mattered. Kiel had moments but were architects of their own downfall. Plenty to work on for both sides with the competitive season two weeks away.
