Groningen vs Volos NFC

Kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes after Volos were caught in traffic following a motorway accident en route to Veendam, with both teams and match officials agreeing to push the start back to 13:15 local time.

The first half was a scrappy affair. Both sides cancelled each other out, and the referee was forced into action around the half-hour mark, brandishing yellow cards to players from both teams within the space of a minute (25') before a Volos player was also booked at 37'. The game was repeatedly interrupted by stoppages and offside flags, with only one notable chance for each side before the break.

The pattern shifted after half-time. Volos sat deeper, ceding possession to Groningen, who pushed forward with increasing urgency. Manager Dick Lukkien introduced summer signing Nikolas Brandis at right-back on the hour mark for his unofficial debut in green and white.

The best chance arrived with 15 minutes remaining. Thom van Bergen rose highest to meet a cross with a powerful header, only for substitute goalkeeper Siampanis Marios to produce a superb reflex save, getting a hand to the ball just in time. At the other end, Groningen goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen was rarely troubled.

Siampanis' save from Van Bergen's header in the 75th minute was the defining moment. Until then, Groningen had probed without clear-cut openings. The Greek goalkeeper's athletic stop preserved the clean sheet and summed up an afternoon where Lukkien's side created pressure without the final product.

Thom van Bergen (Groningen): The striker led the line well and came closest to breaking the deadlock with his powerful late header. His movement caused problems throughout the second half.

Siampanis Marios (Volos NFC): The substitute goalkeeper entered the game late but produced the match's defining moment with his point-blank save from Van Bergen. His intervention earned Volos a credible draw.

Etienne Vaessen (Groningen): Had little to do but commanded his area with authority when called upon, keeping a clean sheet.

Travis Hernes (Groningen): The midfielder provided creative impetus from the right flank, linking well with Van der Werff and Clement in the second-half build-up.

The 0-0 scoreline tells a story of defensive organisation rather than a lack of ambition. Groningen's second-half territorial dominance did not translate into high-quality chances. Van Bergen's header accounted for the bulk of Groningen's threat. Volos registered just one shot of note in the entire match, underlining their defensive-first approach after the break. The yellow-card count (two for Volos, one for Groningen) reflected the first-half tension rather than a dirty game.

For Groningen, this was the second pre-season test against Greek opposition, following last week's 2-1 defeat to AEK Athens in Apeldoorn. The goalless draw offers Lukkien useful data on his squad's depth a week before the Eredivisie season begins. Brandis' debut is a positive indicator, while the team's second-half control suggests fitness levels are building.

Next up for Groningen is the club's Open Dag on Saturday, 1 August, featuring a friendly against Spanish Segunda División side Real Valladolid at Euroborg (18:00 kick-off). Volos NFC continue their pre-season preparations ahead of the new Greek Super League campaign.

A textbook pre-season friendly: competitive without being frantic, useful for fitness without being decisive. Groningen will want more cutting edge in front of goal before the real action begins, but the defensive solidity and second-half control were encouraging signs for Lukkien.
