Shamrock Rovers vs Ararat-Armenia

Trailing 2-0 from last week's first leg in Yerevan, Shamrock Rovers knew they needed a near-perfect start at Tallaght Stadium. They got it.

Matthew Healy opened the scoring in the 11th minute, collecting Aaron Greene's lay-off on the edge of the area and rifling a finish into the corner. The goal was delayed by a six-minute VAR check for a potential offside before referee Sam Barrott confirmed the decision (the42.ie).

Aaron Greene doubled the lead in the 36th minute after a defensive howler from Ararat. Alexandro Malis underhit his back-pass to goalkeeper João Bravim. Greene intercepted, Jack Byrne rounded the goalkeeper, and squared for Greene to tap into an empty net — levelling the tie on aggregate.

Sandro Lima struck the decisive blow in the 73rd minute. Substitute Carlos França raced to the byline and cut back; Tunmise Sobowale got a touch but the ball fell to the Brazilian forward, who fired home from close range. Ararat led 3-2 on aggregate, and Rovers could not find a second equaliser.

Lima's goal — scored just one minute after França's introduction — was the hammer blow. Ararat's first shot on target of the second half killed the momentum Rovers had built. Stephen Bradley threw on five attacking substitutes (Jonathan Afolabi, Enda Stevens, Danny Mandroiu, Naj Razi and Michael Noonan) but clear chances dried up.

Matthew Healy (Shamrock Rovers) — The midfielder's emphatic 11th-minute strike set the tone and was the catalyst for Rovers' best spell. His energy in central midfield drove the hosts forward in the first half.

Jack Byrne (Shamrock Rovers) — The creative hub of Rovers' attack. Byrne drifted to the right wing to find space, carved Ararat open with his runs, and showed composure to set up Greene's goal after rounding the keeper.

Sandro Lima (Ararat-Armenia) — The Brazilian forward scored the goal that sent his side through. He had gone close in the first half with a sliding effort wide, but made no mistake when it mattered most.

Player of the Match: Jack Byrne — his creativity and movement were the difference in Rovers' best periods.

The match page shows a tale of two halves: Rovers dominated the first 45 with high pressing and quick transitions, while Ararat grew into the game after the break, using their bench to regain control. The 2-1 scoreline flatters the competitiveness of the second half — Ararat's 73rd-minute goal was worth more than their overall possession stats suggested.

Ararat-Armenia advance to the Champions League third qualifying round, continuing their European campaign. Shamrock Rovers drop into the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round, where they will face Albanian side Egnatia Rrogozhinë — who lost 4-1 on penalties to Celje after a 5-5 aggregate draw on the same night (the42.ie).

The result also carries a significant financial sting. Advancing to the Champions League proper would have guaranteed Shamrock Rovers €18.6 million; even reaching the third qualifying round would have secured at least €3.1 million in UEFA prize money. Dropping to the Europa League route reduces that earning potential.

Rovers remain seven points clear at the top of the League of Ireland Premier Division after 25 matches. Ararat, by contrast, are still in pre-season with their domestic campaign starting on 31 July.

Shamrock Rovers did everything required in the first half — two well-taken goals, high intensity, and a raucous Tallaght crowd behind them. But the second-half drop-off, combined with the damage already done in Yerevan, proved too much to overcome. Ararat-Armenia were pragmatic, patient, and lethal when it mattered. The Hoops' Champions League adventure ends at the second hurdle, but Europa League football awaits.
