Bohemians vs Ballkani

Ballkani, who reached the Conference League group stage in 2023-24, set up deep and frustrated the home side for long spells. The visitors took the lead in the 29th minute when Valentin Serebe was brought down by Pat Hickey inside the area, and Austrian referee Jakob Semler pointed to the spot. Domgjoni sent goalkeeper Paul Walters the wrong way, stroking the penalty straight down the middle.

Bohemians struggled to generate clear chances in the first half. Spotting James-Taylor's run, Devoy played a sharp pass into the forward's path, and James-Taylor swept a first-time shot across Golubovic and inside the far post via the butt of the upright — his first goal since arriving at the club.

Ballkani had threatened to double their lead just minutes earlier when Sam Todd's poor touch fell to Serebe, but Walters produced a fine one-handed save to deny the lob. The visitors appeared to retreat into a defensive shell after the equaliser, inviting pressure.

Tierney's winner was a moment of individual brilliance. James-Taylor cushioned a pass to the edge of the area, and Tierney's first-time strike flew into the net with such ferocity that Golubovic had no time to react.

"Once I hit it, you feel it's got a chance… thankfully it hit the underside of the crossbar and went in," Tierney told RTÉ Sport.

Ross Tierney (Bohemians) — Scored the decisive goal with a stunning half-volley and was a constant threat in the final third throughout the second half. His composure under pressure belied the tight angle he was working with, and his strike will be remembered as the last European goal at Dalymount before redevelopment.

Douglas James-Taylor (Bohemians) — Introduced in the 59th minute, the substitute changed the game entirely. He scored the equaliser with a clinical first-time finish and then provided the assist for Tierney's winner with a perfectly weighted pass. Reynolds called the impact of his substitutes "massive."

Dawson Devoy (Bohemians) — The Bohemians captain orchestrated the equaliser with quick thinking over a free kick, spotting James-Taylor's movement before anyone else. His overall influence grew as the game progressed.

Adnan Golubovic (Ballkani) — Made several smart saves to keep his side in the game, including a sharp stop from Devoy's free kick moments before the equaliser and a crucial claw away from Strods' cross-shot in the first half. Could do little about either Bohemians goal.

Bohemians' underlying numbers reflected a game of two distinct halves. After managing only one shot on target in the first period, they registered three in the second half — and scored from two of them. Ballkani's decision to sit deep after taking the lead conceded territory and momentum, and the visitors finished without a second-half shot on target despite Serebe's dangerous lob that forced Walters into action. The penalty was Ballkani's only shot on target in the entire match.

Bohemians take a slender 2-1 lead into the second leg in Pristina on 30 July. The winner of the tie will face either Besiktas of Turkey or Midtjylland of Denmark in the third qualifying round. Should Bohemians progress, they would not be able to play their home leg at Dalymount Park, as the stadium does not meet UEFA requirements for that stage of the competition.

This was the final European fixture at the historic Dublin 7 venue before its redevelopment — a ground that has hosted Manchester United, Atlético Madrid and Bayern Munich over the decades.

"This is the last European game in Dalymount. What a way to end it — with a goal like that," Reynolds said.

Bohemians were second-best for long stretches but showed the resilience of a side that refuses to accept defeat on home soil. Reynolds' substitutions turned the game, and Tierney's finish was worthy of winning any tie. The one-goal cushion is precarious; Ballkani showed enough quality in the first half to suggest the second leg in Pristina remains wide open.
