Dunajska Streda vs Velež

The opening 45 minutes offered few clear chances. Velež, organised in a compact 4-2-3-1 under manager Ibro Rahimic, frustrated the home side. Rafidine Abdullah was booked as early as the 12th minute for a tactical foul, setting the tone for a scrappy first half that ended 0-0. DAC's Abdoulaye Gueye also went into the book just before the break (43').

The breakthrough came 14 minutes into the second half. A penalty was awarded to Dunajská Streda, and Georgian striker Giorgi Gagua stepped up to convert with a right-footed shot past goalkeeper Faris Ribić (59'). It was the only goal of the match.

Robert Klauß made a double change on 67 minutes — Matej Trusa and Fallou Diongue replacing Gueye and Samsondin Ouro — before Uroš Kabić made way for Andreas Gruber (78'). Velež's only substitution saw Mahir Bešić replace Djani Salčin (77'). Ammar Ramadan (DAC) and Armin Spahić (Velež) were both booked late on as the game became stretched, but neither side found the net again.

The penalty award in the 59th minute was the decisive moment. Until then, Velež had defended with discipline and looked capable of leaving Dunajská Streda with a goalless draw. The spot-kick forced them out of their shell, and while they committed men forward in the closing stages, they could not carve out a clear equaliser.

Giorgi Gagua (Dunajská Streda) — The Georgian forward kept his composure from 12 yards to score the only goal. He was a persistent threat in the channels and drew fouls throughout the second half.

Faris Ribić (Velež) — The Velež goalkeeper made several saves to keep the score at 1-0, notably denying a late DAC effort. Without him, the tie might already be out of reach.

Aljaž Ivačič (Dunajská Streda) — The Slovenian goalkeeper was a spectator for long periods but commanded his box on crosses, recording a clean sheet on his European debut for the club.

The 1-0 scoreline reflects a game of few chances. DAC controlled possession for long stretches but struggled to break down a well-drilled Velež defence until the penalty. Four yellow cards — two to each team — underline the stop-start nature of the contest. Velež made only one substitution all game, suggesting Rahimic was reluctant to disrupt his defensive shape, while Klauß used all five changes to inject fresh legs.

Dunajská Streda take a one-goal lead into the second leg on 30 July at the Bilino Polje Stadium in Zenica (19:00 CEST). The winner of the tie will face the loser of the Europa League second qualifying round tie between Twente Enschede and Ferencváros Budapest in the third qualifying round.

For DAC, this was their first victory in European competition since July 2023, ending a run of four European matches without a win. Velež will back themselves to overturn the deficit on home soil.

A narrow, professional first-leg win for Dunajská Streda, but the tie is far from over. The Slovak side will need to be more clinical in the return leg, while Velež will feel a 1-0 deficit is recoverable with the support of their home crowd in Zenica.
