Wales dominated possession from the opening whistle but struggled to break down a disciplined Montenegro side that defended deep in numbers. Montenegro's deep 5-4-1 defensive block limited Wales to low-quality shots from distance for long stretches. Wales struggled to convert territorial dominance into high-value chances, while Montenegro's single moment of quality in the final third yielded a point.

The draw leaves Wales (8 points) level with Czech Republic (8 points) atop Group B1, but Wales trail on goal difference. Both sides dropped points on matchday five — the Czechs were held 1-1 at home by Albania — meaning Tuesday's meeting at Cardiff City Stadium (9 June, 18:00 BST) is effectively a winner-takes-all decider for top spot and a more favourable path through the World Cup play-offs.

Montenegro earned their first point of the campaign but remain bottom of the group with one match to play.

Wales created enough to win but paid for a single moment of defensive sloppiness and a lack of ruthlessness in front of goal.
