League of Legends is the most-watched esport globally, with professional leagues across four major regions producing year-round betting opportunities and some of the deepest esports markets available.
How LoL Competition Works
Professional LoL features regional leagues playing weekly during Spring and Summer splits. Regular season matches are best-of-1 (BO1), playoffs are best-of-3 or best-of-5, and international events (MSI, Worlds) feature group stages and knockout rounds.
Each match involves two phases: the draft (banning and picking champions) and the game itself (typically lasting 25-40 minutes). Understanding both is essential for betting.
Key Betting Markets
Match Winner
The primary market. In BO1 regular season matches, upset rates are around 35-40%, making underdogs worth considering. In BO3/BO5 playoff matches, the better team wins more consistently.
Map Handicap and Total Maps
For BO3 matches, map handicap (-1.5 maps) provides better odds on dominant favourites. Total maps over/under 2.5 is effectively a bet on whether the match goes to a deciding third game.
Objective Markets
First blood, first tower, first dragon, and first Baron are all available at major bookmakers. These markets reward team-specific analytical knowledge.
Research Framework
Regional Strength
At international events, LCK and LPL teams historically outperform Western teams. When these regions meet at MSI or Worlds, the odds usually reflect this — but the gap between regions fluctuates year to year.
Patch Meta Analysis
LoL changes every two weeks. Champions that were dominant can become weak, and vice versa. Teams that specialise in certain champions or strategies may suddenly find their style nerfed. Check patch notes and analyse how recent changes affect each team's preferred compositions.
Roster and Coaching Changes
Roster swaps mid-season are common. A new jungler or mid-laner changes team dynamics fundamentally. Factor in adaptation time — most teams need 3-4 weeks to integrate a new player.
Getting Started
Focus on one or two leagues initially (LEC and LCK are the most accessible for European bettors). Use Oracle's Elixir for game statistics and Leaguepedia for roster information. Build your understanding of the current meta before expanding to multiple regions.
