The Tote offers a fundamentally different way to bet on horse racing — instead of fixed odds set by a bookmaker, your return is determined by how the total pool of money is shared among winners.
How Tote Betting Works
- All bets on a race are pooled together
- The Tote operator deducts commission (13-30%)
- The remaining pool is divided equally among winning bets
- Your return (dividend) is declared after the race
Unlike bookmaker betting, you do not know your exact return when you place the bet. The dividend depends on how many people backed the winner.
Main Tote Bet Types
Tote Win
Pick the winner of a race. The simplest pool bet. Protected by the Tote Guarantee (never pays less than SP).
Tote Place
Pick a horse to finish in the places (typically top 2-4 depending on field size). Dividends are usually lower than Win but with a higher strike rate.
Tote Exacta
Pick the first two finishers in the correct order. Pays significantly more than Win bets but is much harder to land.
Tote Trifecta
Pick the first three finishers in correct order. Large dividends possible but extremely difficult.
Tote vs Fixed Odds
| Factor | Tote Betting | Fixed-Odds Betting |
|---|---|---|
| Return known | After the race | Before placing bet |
| Pricing | Pool-based dividends | Bookmaker-set odds |
| Outsider value | Often better | Standard |
| Favourite value | Often worse | Standard |
| Minimum stake | £1 (most bets) | Varies by bookmaker |
When Tote Betting Shines
- Outsiders: Less popular selections receive a disproportionately large share of the pool
- Exotic bets: Exactas and Trifectas in larger fields can produce enormous dividends
- Multi-race bets: Placepot and Scoop6 offer jackpot-style excitement for small stakes
