Asian handicap betting eliminates the draw from football, reducing three possible outcomes to two. This gives you a better chance of winning and typically offers sharper odds than traditional 1X2 markets.
How Asian Handicaps Work
The bookmaker assigns a goal handicap to each team. The favourite receives a negative handicap (e.g. -1.5) and the underdog a positive one (e.g. +1.5). After the match, the handicap is applied to the final score to determine the winner.
Example: Manchester City -1.5 vs Wolverhampton +1.5
- City win 3-0: After handicap, City lead 1.5-0. City backers win.
- City win 1-0: After handicap, it is -0.5 to 0. Wolves backers win.
Half-Goal Handicaps
Half-goal lines (-0.5, -1.5, -2.5, +0.5, +1.5) always produce a decisive result. No refunds, no split outcomes. This is the simplest type of Asian handicap.
| Handicap | Your Team Must... | To Win |
|---|---|---|
| -0.5 | Win by any margin | Win |
| -1.5 | Win by 2+ goals | Win |
| -2.5 | Win by 3+ goals | Win |
| +0.5 | Win or draw | Win |
| +1.5 | Win, draw, or lose by 1 | Win |
Whole-Goal Handicaps
Whole-goal lines (0, -1, -2) introduce the possibility of a push (void). If the result after handicap is a draw, your stake is refunded.
Example: Arsenal -1 vs Brighton. Arsenal win 2-1 — after handicap it is 1-1. Stake refunded.
Quarter-Goal Handicaps
Quarter-goal lines (-0.25, -0.75, -1.25) split your stake across two adjacent half-goal lines.
-0.75 handicap = half your stake on -0.5, half on -1.0
- Your team wins by 2+: both halves win
- Your team wins by 1: the -0.5 half wins, the -1.0 half is refunded (push)
- Draw or loss: both halves lose
Why Asian Handicaps Offer Better Value
With only two outcomes instead of three, the bookmaker's margin is significantly lower. Asian handicap overround typically sits at 2-3% versus 5-8% on standard 1X2 markets. Over hundreds of bets, this difference compounds into meaningful savings.
