Sweden is one of the historic giants of world handball, with four World Championship titles and a tradition of excellence spanning over a century. The Handbollsligan features 124 clubs across 6 competitions.

While Sweden's dominance has receded somewhat from its 1990s peak, the country remains a significant handball nation with a strong domestic league and continued production of quality players for European clubs.

The Swedish Handball Federation, founded in 1907, is one of the oldest in the world. Sweden was a pioneer of the sport and became one of its most successful nations, winning four World Championship titles (1954, 1958, 1990, 1999).

The 1990s were Sweden's golden era, with the national team winning World Championships in 1990 and 1999 and three consecutive Olympic silver medals (1992, 1996, 2000). Players like Magnus Wislander, Stefan Lovgren, and Staffan Olsson became legends of the sport. While Sweden has not reached the same heights in recent years, the country's handball infrastructure and tradition remain strong.

The Swedish Handball Federation (Svenska Handbollsforbundet) is the governing body for handball in Sweden. Founded in 1907, it is one of the oldest handball federations in the world and a member of the EHF and IHF.

The Handbollsligan is the top division of men's handball in Sweden. The Swedish Handball Cup provides knockout competition. The league has historically been strong, developing players who go on to star in the German Bundesliga and other top European leagues.

Sweden has won four World Championship titles (1954, 1958, 1990, 1999) and three Olympic silver medals (1992, 1996, 2000). Magnus Wislander was named IHF World Player of the Century. Swedish club handball has also been competitive in European cup competitions throughout its history.
