Hockey is one of the most popular and culturally significant sports in Sweden, rivalling football for national attention. The Sweden Hockey league system is one of the deepest and most competitive in Europe. The SHL (Swedish Hockey League, formerly Elitserien), featuring 14 teams, is the top division and one of the strongest domestic leagues in the world outside the NHL. The league's playoff champion receives the historic Le Mat Trophy, first awarded in 1926.

Below the SHL, HockeyAllsvenskan serves as the second tier, with promotion and relegation linking the two divisions. Further tiers (Division 1, Division 2, and below) extend the pyramid into regional and amateur hockey. Sweden's junior leagues, including the J20 Nationell, are among the best-organised youth development competitions in world hockey and consistently produce NHL-calibre talent.

Sweden is one of the most successful nations in international Hockey history.
