Hockey in Ukraine developed within the Soviet hockey system, with teams in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities contributing to Soviet hockey. Following independence in 1991, the Ice Hockey Federation of Ukraine was established in 1992, and the country began building its own national programme.

Ukraine has competed at various levels of the IIHF World Championship, with occasional appearances in the top division. The establishment of HC Donbass in Donetsk brought a period of higher-profile professional hockey before conflict in eastern Ukraine disrupted the club's activities.
