Central Coast Rhinos vs Newcastle

Newcastle's refusal to panic after falling 2-0 down. The Northstars held a 35-10 shot advantage through two periods despite trailing, which meant the equaliser felt inevitable. Skachkov's goal at 10:14 of the third broke Central Coast's resistance, and Baazzi's winner 3:31 later sealed it. The Rhinos took three minor penalties in the final 13 minutes and could not stem the tide.

Anand Oberoi (Central Coast Rhinos) — The standout player on the ice. Oberoi faced 58 shots and made 55 saves (94.8 SV%). Without him, the margin would have been far wider. His performance kept the Rhinos competitive deep into the third period.

Santeri Haarala (Newcastle Northstars) — Two primary assists, including the setup on both Skachkov's equaliser and Baazzi's winner. Haarala was the creative engine in Newcastle's third-period surge.

Francis Drolet (Newcastle Northstars) — Two assists on the Bright and Baazzi goals, playing a central role in the transition play that overwhelmed the Rhinos in the second half of the game.

Bryan Sautereau (Central Coast Rhinos) — A goal and an assist before the Rhinos were pinned deep in their own zone for the remainder of the game. His early production was the only offensive support the Rhinos generated.

The 58-17 shot advantage (23-7 in the third period alone) tells the real story. Newcastle generated more than three shots for every one the Rhinos mustered, yet needed two third-period goals to escape. Oberoi's 55 saves were the most by any AIHL goaltender in a single game this season. The Rhinos' defensive structure conceded 58 attempts on net — unsustainable regardless of who is in goal.

The Rhinos took 10 minutes in penalties (5 infractions) compared to Newcastle's 12 minutes (6 infractions), but the Northstars killed all three Rhinos power plays, while Central Coast conceded the equaliser and game-winner at even strength.

For the season series, Newcastle won 3-1 — dropping only the first meeting 6-3 on 2 May before winning the next three.

Newcastle (20-8-1-0, 62 points) strengthened their grip on the minor premiership with one regular-season game remaining — Sunday 23 August against the Sydney Bears at Macquarie Ice Rink (5:00 PM AEST). The Goodall Cup Finals series begins 28-30 August at O'Brien Icehouse in Melbourne.

For Central Coast (9-19-1-2, 30 points), this was their final home game of 2026. Already eliminated from finals contention, the Rhinos conclude their campaign on the road against the Sydney Ice Dogs on Sunday 23 August.

Newcastle's depth and shot volume eventually overwhelmed a Rhinos side that played admirably through Oberoi's heroics but lacked the offensive structure to sustain pressure. The 58-shot performance is a statement ahead of finals — the question is whether their tendency to leave games late will cost them against elite opposition in the playoffs.
