Opava vs Sumperk

Šumperk needed just 21 seconds to open the scoring. Tobiáš Handl received a pass between the circles and fired a wrist shot over the shoulder of Opava goaltender Marek Slíž — 0-1. The Dragons doubled their lead inside three minutes when Handl struck again on the power play, burying a feed from David Buršík from the slot off the left post.

Opava's discipline unravelled under the early pressure. A second power-play opportunity for Šumperk in the 13th minute produced a third goal: Ludvík Rutar forced the puck over the line through sheer determination in front of the net after Handl's initial attempt. Handl and David Buršík drew assists.

Opava responded almost immediately. Robin Slanina capitalised on a scrappy sequence in the offensive zone, beating Dominik Frgál with a quick shot at 13:50 to make it 1-3.

But Šumperk had the final word of the period. With five seconds left on the clock, Handl broke clear on a partial breakaway and was hauled down, earning a penalty shot. He stepped up and slotted the puck under Slíž's glove to complete his hat-trick at 19:55 — 1-4 after 20 minutes.

Handl's penalty-shot goal with five seconds left in the first period effectively ended the contest before the first intermission. A 4-1 lead after one period — built on shots-on-goal dominance Šumperk carried throughout — allowed the Dragons to manage the second period conservatively and strike again in the third. Opava never recovered from that first-period avalanche.

The second period passed without a goal. Šumperk rotated in backup goaltender Jakub Král at 31:00; he would face no further goals against.

Šumperk outshot Opava 49-22 across 60 minutes — a staggering +27 shot differential that reflects the gulf in preparation. Šumperk had been on the ice for only three days of team training before this match, while Opava had already played a full friendly (a 6-2 loss to Poruba). Despite less preparation time, Šumperk were faster to every puck and far more structured in all three zones.

The penalty count — 9 minors for Opava against 4 for Šumperk — tells the story of a home side chasing the game from the opening shift and never catching up. Šumperk converted 2 of 4 power plays; Opava went 0-for-4 with the man advantage.

Šumperk start their pre-season with a commanding win and a goal difference of +5 from one match. Opava, under new Slovak head coach Vladimír Klinga, now have two pre-season defeats (6-2 to Poruba, then 6-1 to Šumperk) and considerable defensive work ahead. Both teams play in the Czech second tier (2. liga).

Šumperk coach Tomáš Sedlák told the club's website: "We've only played our first pre-season match, so it's not really my place to judge anything. But considering we jumped into the game after just three days on the ice, we can be extremely satisfied. There was enormous desire from the team. In the first and third periods our movement was fantastic, we were everywhere first, and we played exactly what we wanted. I'd say we barely let Opava do anything. We're happy with the result — we praised the boys — but we have to keep our feet on the ground. We've got a whole season ahead and plenty of work still to do."

Both clubs begin their league campaigns on Saturday 19 September.

A clinical pre-season start from Šumperk, who looked sharp despite minimal preparation time. Handl's hat-trick inside the opening period was the headline, but the structural dominance — 49 shots, relentless forechecking, disciplined special teams — is what will please Sedlák most. Opava have clear issues to resolve before September, particularly in defensive zone coverage and penalty kill.
