Sweden U18 vs Slovakia U18

Slovakia struck first despite being shorthanded. Patrik Rychlik capitalised on a Swedish turnover at 11:40 of the first period, with Miroslav Kalousek picking up the assist, to give Slovakia a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. Slovakia outshot Sweden 9-5 in the opening frame.

Sweden found their footing in the second period. Wiggo Forsberg equalised at 17:29, assisted by Ludvig Vestman and Loui Karlsson, to send the teams to the second intermission level at 1-1. Slovakia had a 16-12 shot advantage through two periods but could not extend their lead.

The third period was a whirlwind. Tomas Selic put Slovakia back ahead at 5:01, with Oliver Ozogany assisting, but Sweden responded just 96 seconds later through Milan Sundstrom's first of the night, set up by Oliver Sundberg and Dorian Eklund Aspe. Douglas Johnsson then gave Sweden their first lead at 11:51, with Sundstrom and Wille Andersson Johnk providing the helpers. Slovakia pulled their goaltender, and Oliver Botka forced overtime at 16:31, assisted by Selic and Matus Valek.

In the 3-on-3 extra session, Sundstrom struck again at 2:51, finishing off a feed from Tom Bjurman to seal the 4-3 win.

Slovakia's goaltender change proved costly. Starter Jakub Husar stopped 26 of 28 shots for a .929 save percentage through 50 minutes, but after Sweden took a 3-2 lead, Slovakia replaced him with Nicko Zakk Havel. Havel faced only seven shots in 12 minutes but conceded two goals — including the equaliser that forced overtime and the OT winner — for a .714 save percentage. The decision to pull Husar backfired as Sweden's offensive pressure intensified.

• Milan Sundstrom (Sweden): Two goals (including the OT winner) and one assist. The forward was involved in three of Sweden's four goals and was the clear difference-maker in extra time.
• Vilmer Salen Forsberg (Sweden): The Swedish goaltender made 35 saves on 38 shots for a .921 save percentage, keeping his team in the game during Slovakia's 16-shot second period.
• Tomas Selic (Slovakia): A goal and an assist, Selic was Slovakia's most dangerous offensive threat and played a key role in both third-period rallies.
• Patrik Rychlik (Slovakia): Scored the opening shorthanded goal, giving Slovakia early momentum.

Player of the Match: Milan Sundstrom (Sweden)

Slovakia outshot Sweden 38-35 overall, including a dominant 16-12 edge in the second period, but managed only one goal from those 16 shots. Sweden's shooting efficiency (11.4%) outpaced Slovakia's (7.9%), and both teams went 0-for on the power play — Sweden had five opportunities, Slovakia four. The game's four goals in the third period reflected an open, end-to-end contest as fatigue set in. The shot totals (38-35) and scoring chances were close, but Sweden's ability to finish in the clutch moments proved decisive.

Sweden (1-0-0) took an early lead in Group A standings with the win, joining Canada atop the group after the hosts' 7-3 victory over Switzerland earlier on Monday. Slovakia (0-0-1) picked up a valuable point from the overtime loss in the group-stage format. Both teams are back in action on Tuesday, August 4: Sweden face Switzerland at 3:00 pm MDT, while Slovakia take on Canada at 5:00 pm MDT at Rogers Place.

A thoroughly entertaining Group A opener that lived up to its billing. Slovakia showed they can compete with the tournament favourites, but defensive lapses in the third period and the costly goaltender change handed Sweden the opening they needed. Sundstrom's overtime heroics stamped Sweden's quality in the clutch, though they will need a sharper start against Canada on Wednesday.
