Halifax Mooseheads vs Cape Breton Eagles

First period — even early exchanges. Halifax struck first at 12:10 when 2026 QMJHL draft pick Chase Cleary finished a crisp passing sequence from Jack Cameron and Nathan Ruel to make it 1–0. Cape Breton responded inside five minutes: Owen Frick beat a Halifax defender to Gavin Smith's feed and levelled at 1–1 with two minutes left in the period.

Second period — Reynolds breaks the deadlock. The lone goal of the middle frame came on the power play at 14:00. Brayden Reynolds ripped a shot from the circle past Halifax goaltender Carson Mertz, with Evan Lyver credited with both assists. Cape Breton carried a 2–1 lead into the second intermission.

Third period — Eagles pull away. Cape Breton poured it on in the final 20 minutes. Reynolds struck again just 3:27 into the period, this time at even strength with Smith and Frick setting him up. Frick then made it 4–1 on a power-play at 8:21 from Thomas Durocher's feed, and Sean Millen capped the scoring with another power-play goal at 16:39, assisted by Reynolds and Riley Creelman.

Cape Breton scored three power-play goals in the second and third periods, putting the game out of reach.

Reynolds' second goal, 3:27 into the third period. Halifax had survived the second period down only 2–1 and needed a strong start to the third to get back into it. Instead, Reynolds doubled the lead early, and the Mooseheads never recovered. The goal triggered a three-goal Eagles outburst in the period.

• Brayden Reynolds (Cape Breton) — Two goals (including the game-winner) and one assist. Player of the Match. The American forward was the driving force behind the Eagles' attack.
• Owen Frick (Cape Breton) — Two goals (one at even strength, one on the power play) and one primary assist on Reynolds' third-period strike. Involved in three of the Eagles' five goals.
• Chase Cleary (Halifax) — The 2026 draft pick scored Halifax's only goal, finishing off a crisp setup in the opening period. One of the few bright spots for the home side.
• Carson Mertz (Halifax) — Faced heavy pressure as Cape Breton tilted the ice in the second and third periods.

Cape Breton scored three power-play goals across the second and third periods (Reynolds, Frick, Millen), while Halifax did not convert with the man advantage. The Eagles' 5–1 victory came despite the game being level at 1–1 after 18 minutes — Cape Breton scored four unanswered goals from that point. The shot differential tilted heavily in favour of the visitors as the game wore on, particularly in the third period.

This was the first of two preseason meetings between the provincial rivals. The teams meet again on Saturday, August 22 at 7 p.m. at Membertou Sport and Wellness Centre in Sydney, Nova Scotia. For the Mooseheads, the focus will be on tightening defensive coverage, particularly on the penalty kill. Cape Breton's rookie camp, which began with intrasquad scrimmages earlier in the week, continues with the rematch before cuts are expected on Sunday.

The QMJHL regular season has not yet begun. Halifax and Cape Breton will open their regular-season campaigns in September.

Cape Breton's American imports — Reynolds, Frick and Millen — dictated the game from the second period onward. Halifax showed competitive flashes in the first period but were outclassed at even strength and on special teams as the game progressed. A deserved preseason win for the Eagles, who will look to complete the two-game sweep on Saturday.
