The Americans controlled possession from the opening face-off but could not find a way past Great Britain netminder Ben Bowns until the 14th minute. The breakthrough came off the stick of Paul Cotter, who cleaned up a rebound at the side of the crease after sustained pressure from the third line. Mathieu Olivier and Max Sasson drew assists on the play, and the USA carried a 1–0 lead into the first intermission.

Shots in the opening frame were 10–7 in favour of the USA, but Great Britain had already shown they could generate chances — notably through forward Liam Kirk, who tested Devin Cooley with a high shot that the American goaltender managed to shake off.

Great Britain came out with renewed energy in the second period and capitalised on a power play at the 8-minute mark. Nathanael Halbert unleashed a shot from the point that beat Cooley, knotting the game at 1–1. Josh Waller and Brendan Perlini picked up the assists, and for a moment the Swiss Life Arena sensed an upset brewing.

Conor Clifton had been sent off for high-sticking moments earlier, and the British power-play unit made no mistake. The momentum, however, proved short-lived.

Just nine minutes later, former Hobey Baker winner Isaac Howard restored the American lead. Howard pounced on a turnover in the neutral zone, drove into the offensive zone, and fired past Bowns to make it 2–1. The goal stood as the turning point of the match — the USA never trailed again.

USA carried a 25–15 shot advantage into the second break.

If the first 40 minutes were competitive, the third period belonged entirely to the United States. The Americans struck twice within 15 seconds early in the final frame to put the game out of reach.

First, Mathieu Olivier scored at the 2-minute mark off feeds from Sam Lafferty and Paul Cotter. Then, just seconds later, defenceman Declan Carlile added another — again with Cotter and Olivier in the play — making it 4–1. Both Cotter and Olivier finished the night with a goal and two assists each, a statement performance from the USA's third line.

Great Britain unsuccessfully challenged the Carlile goal for goaltender interference, earning a delay-of-game penalty. The British penalty kill held firm, but the damage was already done.

Isaac Howard added his second of the night with under four minutes to play, converting on the power play after Travis Brown was called for holding on an Alex Steeves breakaway. Oliver Moore and Tommy Novak assisted on the play, sealing the 5–1 final.

Devin Cooley finished with 19 saves in the American net, while Ben Bowns made 27 stops for Great Britain.

The win moved the USA to 1–1 (3 points) and into fourth place in Group A, firmly in the mix for a quarter-final berth. Great Britain dropped to 0–2 after also losing their opener, sitting seventh in the eight-team group.

Austria, Finland and Switzerland currently hold the top three spots with maximum points (6 each) after two matchdays.

"You have to be willing to grind through games in these tournaments," said USA head coach Don Granato. "It took us a while to get rewarded, but we stuck with it and got three important points."

Howard was named the U.S. Player of the Game for his two-goal effort.

The USA faces a stiff test on Monday against Finland (10:20 a.m. ET), who are 2–0 and feature Florida Panthers star Aleksander Barkov. Great Britain will look to get on the board against Hungary on Tuesday.
