Any hope of a USA comeback evaporated inside the first two minutes of the middle frame. Finland began the period on a power play carried over from late in the first, and Hämeenaho made no mistake, one-timing a feed from Mikko Lehtonen for his second of the game at 20:08.

Just 31 seconds later — and still within the opening minute of the period — Saku Mäenalanen deflected a shot in front to make it 5-1, prompting Granato to pull Woll. The Maple Leafs netminder finished with five goals allowed on 11 shots, replaced by Calgary Flames goaltender Devin Cooley, who had started Sunday's win over Great Britain.

"We're obviously disappointed, but we've got a competitive group and we'll take some lessons from this game as we move forward," Granato said after the match.

The USA found a lifeline early in the third period when Finland took back-to-back penalties — Elmeri Erholtz for roughing and Olli Määttä for delay of game — giving the Americans a 5-on-3 advantage. Ryan Leonard atoned for his earlier turnover by burying a rebound past Justus Annunen at 42:15, with assists from Ryan Ufko and Justin Faulk.

But any notion of a USA rally was short-lived. Paul Cotter was called for roughing, and Finland's Anton Lundell scored just six seconds into the ensuing power play at 45:30, batting in his own rebound to restore the four-goal cushion at 6-2.

Hämeenaho's two-goal, one-assist night was the offensive highlight, but Finland's depth told the story. Mikko Lehtonen and Olli Määttä each collected two assists from the blue line, while Justus Annunen was steady when it mattered, turning aside chances from a USA side that struggled to sustain pressure after the opening period.

For the Americans, only Coronato and Leonard found the net. The defending champions came into the tournament with just two returnees from last year's gold-medal winning squad — the programme's first world title since 1933 — and the lack of continuity showed against a disciplined Finnish system.

The result tightened Group A dramatically. Finland (3-0, 9 points) sits second behind Austria on goal difference, while the USA (1-2, 3 points) finds itself in precarious territory ahead of a critical clash with winless Germany on Wednesday. The top four teams in each group advance to the quarter-finals, and the Americans cannot afford another slip-up.

Finland, meanwhile, looks every bit the contender. Known traditionally for its stifling defensive structure, the Finns have scored at will through three games and will face Latvia on Thursday looking to extend their perfect start.
