Austria vs Germany

The opening frame was a tense, tactical affair. Both sides showed plenty of intensity but struggled to create clear scoring chances. Germany's Maximilian Kastner sat a two-minute tripping penalty at the nine-minute mark, but the German penalty kill held firm. Austrian goaltender Atte Tolvanen was called into action to deny several German looks, while his counterpart Philipp Grubauer between the German pipes remained relatively untroubled as the teams went to the locker room deadlocked at 0-0.

Austria came out sharper in the middle frame. Just two minutes in, Leon Wallner capitalised on a quick counter-attack, finishing past Grubauer with help from Thomas Harnisch and Patrick Stapelfeldt to put Austria 1-0 ahead.

Germany's response was emphatic — and lightning fast. Just 66 seconds later, Lukas Reichel buried a superb feed from Joshua Samanski to level the scores. The German line of Reichel, Samanski and Frederik Tiffels was causing Austria constant problems, and in the 34th minute Samanski got on the scoresheet himself, converting from Tiffels and Reichel to give Germany a 2-1 lead they would take into the second intermission.

The final period belonged entirely to Germany. A power play early in the third gave Reichel his second of the night at the 46-minute mark, making it 3-1 just seconds after the penalty expired. Manuel Wiederer then scored his first international goal two minutes later, slamming home a pass from Moritz Seider to stretch the lead to 4-1.

Austria refused to fold. Vinzenz Rohrer pulled one back just 34 seconds after Wiederer's strike, capitalising on a feed from Schwinger and Nickl to make it 4-2 with plenty of time remaining.

But Austria's discipline crumbled under the pressure. Peter Schneider was called for high sticking, and Thomas Nickl followed with a delay of game penalty, handing Germany a two-man advantage. Reichel made them pay, completing his hat-trick with a power-play strike at the 52-minute mark to restore Germany's three-goal cushion.

With Austria pulling Tolvanen for an extra skater in a desperate late push, Alexander Ehl sealed the result with an empty-net goal at 55 minutes, assisted by Marc Michaelis and Samuel Dove-McFalls.

Lukas Reichel was the undeniable difference-maker. The forward's three-goal, one-assist performance marked his second straight game with a hat-trick for Germany, a remarkable run of form at the exact right moment of the tournament. He was named Germany's player of the match.

"Our team put on a very committed performance today, displaying great physical and running intensity," said Germany head coach Harold Kreis. "That was our plan, and it worked out perfectly for the full 60 minutes. The team deserved the victory, both in terms of their play and, above all, their fighting spirit."

Forward Joshua Samanski, who scored one and assisted another, added: "It was clear we had to win this game. We dominated for over 60 minutes. After falling behind, we immediately came back, which we did very well. Our power-play goals were also important for our confidence."

Germany moved to 10 points in Group A with the win, keeping them in contention for a top-four finish and a quarter-final berth. Austria, despite a brave effort, remained on 9 points and ultimately needed other results to go their way — a scenario that did not materialise as they were later eliminated from the tournament.

Germany's final group game came against Great Britain on Monday, 25 May, with a win required to secure their passage to the knockout rounds.
