Germany vs Great Britain

The opening frame belonged entirely to Germany, who outshot Great Britain 17-5 and turned a tight contest into a three-goal lead inside 30 seconds of chaos.

Great Britain's veteran goaltender Ben Bowns — playing the final game of his decorated 97-cap international career — was sensational early, denying Moritz Seider and Lukas Reichel inside the opening minute and stoning Eric Mik with a sharp glove save midway through the period.

But Germany's pressure eventually told. With 6:04 left in the period, NHL defenceman Moritz Seider threaded a pass to Alexander Karachun, who drove hard to the back door and tucked home the opener (13:56).

What followed was a knockout sequence that broke the game open. Frederik Tiffels used his blistering speed to burst clear down the right wing, cutting inside and picking the top shelf to make it 2-0 (19:25). Just 16 seconds later, Fabio Wagner fired a heavy slap shot through traffic from the right point that beat Bowns clean (19:41).

Three goals in 31 seconds. Germany led 3-0 at the first intermission.

Germany kept their foot on the gas in the second period. Andreas Eder went top-shelf from the slot just 2:12 in to stretch the lead to 4-0 (22:12).

But Great Britain refused to fold. On the powerplay, Nathanel Halbert fed Robert Dowd in the high slot, and with Logan Neilson providing the screen, Dowd fired past NHL netminder Philipp Grubauer to get GB on the board at 24:04.

It was a fitting moment: Dowd was playing his 109th and final game for Great Britain, having announced his retirement from international hockey before the tournament. The 38-year-old forward — GB's all-time leading goal-scorer at World Championship level — leaves an extraordinary legacy.

Liam Kirk nearly pulled GB within two shortly after, denied twice in quick succession by Grubauer, while at the other end Bowns made a huge close-range save on Samuel Dove-McFalls to keep the score at 4-1 heading into the third.

Germany restored control early in the third. Lukas Reichel fed Josh Samanski in the slot for a textbook finish at 40:17, and Leon Gawanke went short-side from the left circle with a clinical shot at 49:00 to make it 6-1.

Down but not beaten, Great Britain produced their best hockey of the tournament in the final 10 minutes.

Ollie Betteridge produced the moment of the match for GB: Brad Jenion sent him down the right wing, and Betteridge motored around the net and beat Grubauer with a stunning wraparound goal at 50:51. It was a moment of pure skill that had the GB bench erupting.

Three minutes later, Robert Lachowicz made it 6-3. Johnny Curran and Logan Neilson combined to set up Lachowicz, who ripped a shot past Grubauer off the right-hand post (54:06).

GB pushed hard for more but ran out of time. The final shots read 42-16 in Germany's favour, underscoring the gulf in firepower that the scoreline — and GB's brave display — had partially obscured.

The match marked the end of an era for British ice hockey. Ben Bowns (97 caps) and Robert Dowd (109 caps) both played their final international games, two pillars of the programme that rose from Division II to back-to-back World Championship appearances in the top division.

GB finished the tournament winless (0-7-0-0) and were relegated back to Division I A. But their performances — particularly the third-period fight against Germany — earned respect.

"The scoreline doesn't tell the full story," said GB head coach. "The character these guys showed, especially in that third period, is what Great Britain ice hockey is all about."

For Germany, the win lifted them to 10 points in Group A (3-0-1-3), keeping them in the hunt for a quarter-final berth behind Switzerland (18), Finland (18), and Latvia (12).

With NHL talents like Seider (Detroit Red Wings) and Grubauer (Seattle Kraken) in their lineup, Germany have the horsepower to trouble any opponent. But they will need to tighten defensively after conceding three late goals to a relegation-bound side.
