Scheifele's hat-trick heroics keep Canada perfect at World Championship

FRIBOURG, Switzerland — Canada survived a major scare at BCF Arena on Thursday, escaping with a dramatic 6-5 overtime victory over Norway after Mark Scheifele completed his hat-trick just 29 seconds into the extra period.

What looked like a routine group-stage assignment for the tournament favourites turned into one of the most entertaining matches of the 2026 IIHF World Championship so far, with Norway pushing the Canadians to the brink before Scheifele delivered the knockout blow.

Scheifele takes centre stage

The Winnipeg Jets centre was unstoppable from the opening puck drop. After Norway jumped out to a 2-0 lead through Eskild Bakke Olsen (5') and Johannes Johannessen (11'), Scheifele single-handedly dragged Canada back into the contest, scoring twice in a four-minute span — first at 13:05 on an unassisted effort, then at 17:28 with help from Parker Wotherspoon and Gabriel Vilardi to level the game at 2-2 after the first period.

"He was the difference," said Norway head coach Petter Thoresen after the game. "We had a plan for him, but when a player of that calibre is on his game, there's only so much you can do."

Norway refuses to buckle

The second period followed a similar pattern. Norway struck first through Noah Steen on the power-play just 3:06 in, but Canada responded instantly when Gabriel Vilardi tipped home a Scheifele feed on the man-advantage at 11:18, making it 3-3 after two periods.

Dylan Cozens opened the third period with a shorthanded breakaway goal just 18 seconds in, set up by Darnell Nurse, to give Canada its first lead of the night at 4-3. But Norway refused to fold. Christoffer Kasastul tied it at 8:18, and Tinus Luc Koblar put Norway ahead 5-4 just 1:48 later, silencing the pro-Canadian crowd.

"We showed tremendous character," said Norway forward Noah Steen, who finished with a goal and an assist. "To come back multiple times against a team like Canada, that says something about this group."

Late heroics and overtime drama

With Canada trailing 5-4 and time winding down, head coach Andre Tourigny pulled goaltender Cam Talbot for an extra attacker with 2:15 remaining. The gamble paid off when Ryan O'Reilly — assisted by Evan Bouchard and Macklin Celebrini — fired home the equaliser with just 1:39 left on the clock, sending the game to overtime.

In the extra frame, it took just 29 seconds for Scheifele to etch his name into the headlines. Celebrini won a face-off and fed Bouchard at the point, who threaded a perfect pass through traffic to Scheifele at the back door for a simple tap-in. The hat-trick was complete, and Canada had survived.

"It's never easy against these guys," Scheifele told reporters afterward. "Norway played a heck of a game — they're fast, they're skilled, and they made us work for every inch. But we found a way. That's what good teams do."

Bouchard's masterclass

Edmonton Oilers defenceman Evan Bouchard logged a game-high 26:55 of ice time — over five minutes more than any other Canadian skater — and registered three assists, including the primary helper on the overtime winner. His performance kept him among the tournament leaders in plus/minus at +8 through four games, tied with teammate Parker Wotherspoon.

"Bouchard was our MVP today," said Canada head coach Andre Tourigny. "The minutes he played, the plays he made under pressure — that's elite-level stuff."

Group B implications

The win moved Canada to 3-0-1-0 (11 points) and top of Group B, with their perfect record in regulation or overtime intact. Norway fell to 2-0-1-1 (7 points) but remained firmly in the mix for a quarter-final spot.

Canada finished with 33 shots on goal to Norway's 24, but the underdogs from Scandinavia showed they belong on the big stage, trading blows with the world's top-ranked nation for 60-plus minutes.

Canada faces Slovenia on Friday in their penultimate preliminary-round match, while Norway takes on Denmark as they continue their push toward the knockout stages.
