"Guys are really working on their finish," Canales said post-match. "They are getting the offensive tackles' hands off them and finishing at the quarterback. That forces teams to get the ball out before they want to."

Kyle Trask (CAR) — 19/28, 147 yards, 1 INT. Composed in the pocket despite constant rain and led four scoring drives. His rhythm improved as the game wore on, hitting David Moore and Feleipe Franks for chunk gains on the Panthers' best drives.

Trevis Gipson (CAR) — One sack, one quarterback hit that forced an interception. The veteran outside linebacker was unblockable early and made his case for a roster spot with a statement performance.

Ryan Fitzgerald (CAR) — 3/3 on field goals (30, 37 yards). A perfect night for the kicker, who also attempted a squib kick for practice, handling the wet conditions without issue.

Cam Gill (CAR) — Two fumble recoveries. The linebacker was in the right place at the right time on both a botched exchange and Moon's strip-sack.

Miles Davis (CAR) — 11 carries, 34 yards, 1 TD. The undrafted rookie from Utah State bulldozed his way through for the game's only offensive touchdown. "He was like, 'you know what, our last name is Davis, and well, Miles Davis has a nice ring to it,'" Davis said of his father's naming choice.

Sabastian Harsh (HOU) — 3 tackles, 1 sack, 1 pass deflection. A bright spot on a Texans defence that otherwise struggled to generate pressure.

The raw stats reflect two cautious offences playing conservatively on a waterlogged field. The Panthers managed 279 total yards to Houston's 173 — a 106-yard gap that mirrors the defensive dominance reflected in Carolina's four sacks and two interceptions. Neither side threw deep with any regularity; Trask's 5.3 yards per attempt and Rypien's 4.4 both point to a game plan built on short, safe passes designed to avoid turnovers on a slippery surface. The three first-half turnovers by the Texans, however, proved decisive: Carolina turned them into two field goals and controlled field position for the rest of the half.

For the Panthers, a 3-1 preseason — their best exhibition record in years — offers some momentum heading into cut weekend. The roster must be trimmed to 53 men by 6 p.m. ET Sunday, and Friday's performances from fringe players like Gipson, Gill, Fitzgerald and Davis will weigh heavily on those decisions.

Canales also faces a call on veteran tight end Darren Waller, signed recently but held out of the game. "Those are the conversations we are going to have this weekend," Canales said.

For the Texans, an 0-3 preseason — their first winless exhibition slate ever — is a concerning sign for depth, particularly on the offensive line. Ryans highlighted the receiver room as an area of tough decisions, with Jayden Higgins lost for the season and Tank Dell still recovering. "We needed to add to the receiver room and we are still trying to find who will be those guys for us," Ryans said.

Both teams open the regular season on 13 September: the Panthers host the Chicago Bears, while the Texans host the Buffalo Bills.

A predictably scrappy preseason finale that told us more about roster depth than regular-season prospects. Carolina's defence — particularly the second and third units — created havoc and forced four turnovers, while Houston's backup offensive line was exposed. Neither side revealed anything about their first-team plans, but for the dozens of players on the roster bubble, this was a night that could define their NFL futures.
