Tennessee Titans vs Chicago Bears

The Bears struck with breathtaking speed. After the Chicago defence forced a three-and-out on the Titans' opening possession, quarterback Tyson Bagent uncorked a 97-yard touchdown pass to Thomas on the first play from scrimmage. Thomas froze cornerback Keydrain Calligan with a stutter step at the line, caught the ball at his own 32-yard line and outran safety Jerrick Reed II to the end zone down the right sideline.

Tennessee responded with a 13-play, 68-yard drive that ended in a 28-yard Joey Slye field goal to make it 7-3 midway through the first quarter. But Chicago's defence repeatedly stiffened, and cornerback Terell Smith broke up a third-down pass in the red zone to force the field goal.

The Titans cut the deficit to 7-6 early in the second quarter after defensive end Jacob Martin recovered a botched handoff between Bagent and Thomas on a jet sweep, setting up Slye's 56-yard field goal — his second of the half.

Chicago answered with a 16-play, 69-yard marathon drive that consumed 9:14 and featured three successful fourth-down conversions. Roschon Johnson powered through for 3 yards on fourth-and-1 from the Bears' 40, Bagent hit Maurice Alexander for 11 yards on fourth-and-2 from the Titans' 38, and the quarterback himself finished the march with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Alexander on fourth-and-goal, extending the lead to 14-6.

Slye's third field goal, a 25-yarder as time expired in the first half, cut the deficit to 14-9 at the break.

The Bears dominated the third quarter. Roschon Johnson rumbled in from 3 yards out to make it 21-9, and Cairo Santos added a 37-yard field goal to push the lead to 24-9. Chicago's defence opened the second half with three consecutive three-and-outs, then closed the third quarter with back-to-back sacks — Jamree Kromah and Jayden Loving each dropped Titans quarterback Hendon Hooker.

Tennessee's only touchdown arrived with 3:50 remaining, as D'Ernest Johnson scampered in from 9 yards. The two-point conversion attempt failed, preserving a two-score Bears lead.

The game turned on its first snap. Bagent's 97-yard strike to Thomas — the longest possible play in football — not only put seven points on the board but forced the Titans into catch-up mode against a Bears defence designed to protect a lead. Tennessee never led and never pulled within one score after the opening minute. For a preseason game built around evaluation rather than game-planning, one play effectively decided the outcome.

Zavion Thomas, WR, Bears — The third-round rookie posted 140 receiving yards on five catches, added a 39-yard punt return and finished with 179 yards from scrimmage. His 4.28-second 40-yard speed was on full display. "It was a great ball, great catch, and then of course 4.28 [speed], great coaching, right?" said head coach Ben Johnson, via the Bears' official site.

Tyson Bagent, QB, Bears — The backup signal-caller completed 16 of 17 passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns in the first half alone, posting a 156.9 passer rating. He also led the Bears in first-half rushing with 21 yards on two carries. Across the entire preseason, Bagent completed 74.4% of his passes for 377 yards with three touchdowns and a 119.3 rating.

Joey Slye, K, Titans — The Titans' kicker accounted for all nine of Tennessee's first-half points, connecting from 28, 56 and 25 yards. The 56-yarder was the standout.

Roschon Johnson, RB, Bears — Led Chicago with 52 rushing yards on 15 carries and scored a 3-yard touchdown. His fourth-and-1 conversion also kept the Bears' pivotal second-quarter touchdown drive alive.

The Bears finished preseason with a 2-1 record. Both teams now face the NFL's cutdown deadline, with rosters required to be trimmed to 53 players by 5 p.m. CT on Sunday.

The Bears open their regular season on 13 September against the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte. The Titans will host the New York Jets at Nissan Stadium on the same date, with Saleh declaring: "We're going to evolve as the year goes on. It's Week One, and we'll be a completely different team come game 17. But this is our floor."

A preseason game decided by one sensational play and controlled by a Bears second-string unit that looked sharper, more disciplined and more motivated than their Titans counterparts. Tennessee's decision to sit its starters after a week of joint practice was understandable but left the first-team offence without meaningful game rhythm heading into the regular season. For Chicago, Bagent's polished audition reaffirmed his value as Caleb Williams' backup, while Thomas announced himself as a rookie to watch.
