Counties Manukau vs Tasman

Counties Manukau struck first when No. 8 Cameron Church crashed over from close range in the 17th minute, with Jackson Rainsford converting for a 7-0 lead.

But the Mako response was immediate and devastating. Taumoefolau crossed for his first in the 19th minute after a break created by Fletcher Hewitt-Smart, and William Havili converted to level the scores. The winger struck again in the 24th minute, finishing a slick passing move initiated by Timoci Sauira, and completed his first-half hat-trick in the 32nd minute with an individual burst through the defence. Havili pushed that conversion wide, leaving Tasman 19-7 ahead.

Counties Manukau hit back before the break, Tuna Tuitama scoring from a pick-and-go maul in the 38th minute. Tevita Ofa converted to cut the deficit to 19-14 at half-time.

Tasman seized control early in the second half. Hooker Richie Asiata dotted down from close range in the 43rd minute and Havili converted, before Taumoefolau scored his fourth in the 45th minute, again converted by Havili. The winger added a fifth in the 50th minute, once more converted, stretching the lead to 40-14.

Counties refused to fold. Replacement Ioane Moananu burrowed over in the 55th minute, AJ Alatimu converted, and Josh Gray intercepted a pass to race away in the 63rd minute. Adam Morrison then added a fifth Steelers try in the 67th minute after a clever offload from Tevita Ofa, with Alatimu converting both to bring the score to 40-35.

But Tasman replied decisively. Timoci Sauira crossed in the 59th minute, Havili converting, and Havili slotted a penalty goal in the 79th minute to close the scoring at 50-35.

Counties Manukau had clawed their way back to 40-35 with three converted tries in 12 minutes and had the momentum. But Tasman struck a hammer blow through Timoci Sauira's try in the 59th minute — set up by Havili's break — which restored the Mako's two-score buffer at 47-35. The margin proved decisive as the Steelers' comeback never recovered.

Kyren Taumoefolau (Tasman) — An extraordinary five-try haul from the wing. Each finish showcased different qualities: support lines, speed on the outside, power through tackles, and relentless work rate. The standout individual performance of the NPC round, without question.

William Havili (Tasman) — Controlled the game from fly-half with a composed tactical hand, converting six of seven tries and adding a late penalty for a personal contribution of 15 points. His break set up Sauira's crucial second-half try.

Tevita Ofa (Counties Manukau) — The Counties centre was involved in much of his side's best attacking work, setting up Morrison's try and converting Tuitama's score. A threat whenever he got the ball.

AJ Alatimu (Counties Manukau) — Came off the bench in the 50th minute and converted all three second-half tries he was involved in, kicking perfectly under pressure.

Player of the match: Kyren Taumoefolau (Tasman)

The 85-point total was one of the highest of the Bunnings NPC round. Seven tries to five tells the story of a game in which both sides attacked with ambition, but Tasman's try conversion rate — particularly Taumoefolau's finishing — was the decisive edge. Counties found holes in the Tasman defence throughout the second half but could not stop the Mako from scoring when they entered the 22. William Havili's 100% goalkicking (six from six before the late penalty) contrasted with two missed conversions from Counties' kickers in the first half.

Tasman move to two wins from three matches (they beat North Harbour 31-29 in Round 1 before losing 50-19 to Hawke's Bay in Round 2), putting them firmly in the playoff mix. Taumoefolau's form — now with eight tries in three games — puts him at the top of the NPC scoring charts.

For Counties Manukau, the Steelers remain winless after three rounds, having lost to Taranaki and Waikato before this defeat. Defensive lapses that allow scores in bursts remain the primary concern for the coaching staff.

Tasman host Southland at Trafalgar Park on 22 August, while Counties Manukau travel to take on Bay of Plenty on the same weekend.

A high-scoring, thoroughly entertaining NPC fixture decided by Tasman's ability to find the tryline from anywhere — and one man's extraordinary finishing. Taumoefolau's five-try performance deserves to be remembered as one of the great individual displays in recent NPC history.
