Manawatu vs North Harbour

Manawatu withstood a furious second-half fightback from North Harbour to claim a 43-40 victory at Central Energy Trust Arena in Palmerston North on Saturday, giving the Turbos their second win of the Bunnings NPC season and snapping a run of three consecutive defeats.

Fly-half George Worboys was the architect of the win, contributing 23 points through four conversions and five penalties in a commanding individual display.

Worboys opened the scoring with a sixth-minute penalty before full-back MacDonald crossed for the opening try in the eighth minute -- unconverted -- to give Manawatu an 8-0 lead. Worboys converted MacDonald's try a minute later to stretch the advantage to 10-0 inside the first 10 minutes.

North Harbour hit back through No.8 George Reeves, who scored in the 10th minute, with fly-half Coby Miln converting to cut the deficit to 10-7. Manawatu responded through Vernon Bason's try in the 15th minute, converted by Worboys, making it 17-7.

Taine Roiri powered over for Manawatu's third try in the 22nd minute, with another Worboys conversion pushing the lead to 24-7. Worboys added a penalty just after the half-hour mark to make it 27-7 before Harbour mounted a response.

Lee scored for North Harbour in the 33rd minute (Miln conversion), and Reeves crossed for his second try of the half in the 38th minute -- again converted by Miln -- to haul Harbour back to 27-21 at the break.

The first 12 minutes of the second half proved decisive. Worboys kicked three penalties -- in the 41st, 46th and 48th minutes -- to push Manawatu's lead from six points to 36-21. That 15-point cushion proved just enough when North Harbour's late surge arrived.

Harbour hooker Koller scored a try in the 54th minute, converted by Miln, before Manawatu winger Kyle Brown crossed in the 56th minute, with Worboys converting to make it 43-28.

But North Harbour refused to fold. Miln scored a try and converted it himself in the 66th-67th minutes, before crossing again for a second try in the 69th minute to bring the visitors within three points at 43-40. Time ran out on the Harbour comeback attempt.

George Worboys (Manawatu) -- The English-born fly-half was the match-winner, contributing 23 points from four conversions and five penalties. His three penalties in the opening 12 minutes of the second half swung the momentum decisively Manawatu's way when Harbour were threatening.

George Reeves (North Harbour) -- The No.8 scored a first-half double, crossing in the 10th and 38th minutes, and was a constant physical presence in the Harbour pack.

Coby Miln (North Harbour) -- Harbour's fly-half scored two tries (66', 69') and landed five conversions for a personal haul of 20 points, dragging his team back into the contest almost single-handedly in the closing stages.

Kyle Brown (Manawatu) -- The winger's crucial 56th-minute try gave Manawatu breathing room at 43-28 just when Harbour were building momentum after Koller's try.

The 43-40 scoreline reflects two contrasting approaches. Manawatu built their score through Worboys' goal-kicking accuracy -- five penalties and four conversions from limited try-scoring opportunities (four tries) -- while North Harbour chased the game with six tries but missed one conversion that ultimately cost them a draw. The three-point margin was exactly the value of one of Worboys' five penalties.

Both teams traded blows at a rate of roughly a try every 11 minutes across the 80-minute contest, producing 83 total points -- one of the highest-scoring matches of the Bunnings NPC season.

The win lifts Manawatu to two wins from five matches in the 2026 Bunnings NPC season, climbing off the bottom of the table after starting with losses to Tasman, Taranaki and other early opponents. For North Harbour, the defeat is a significant blow -- the visitors entered Round 5 with three wins from four matches and positioned near the top of the table, but this result drops them into the mid-pack battle.

Manawatu face Bay of Plenty away in Round 6 on 5 September 2026, while North Harbour host Otago on 3 September 2026 in the final game of the round.

A chaotic, high-scoring affair that Manawatu controlled for long stretches but almost let slip. Worboys' composure off the tee was the difference -- five penalties from a fly-half under constant pressure reflect a side that trusted its set-piece and discipline. North Harbour's refusal to concede despite trailing by 15 points with 25 minutes left shows their quality, but three missed chances at the death will haunt them. Manawatu deserved the win on the balance of play across 80 minutes.
