Wellington vs Counties Manukau

Wellington hit back through a Cameron Burgess conversion after Alex Hewitt went over in the 12th minute, and the full-back added further conversions from Reo Matsushita (23') and Hugo Plummer (28') to nudge the Lions 21-12 ahead. That lead lasted barely three minutes. Molia carved through for his second of the afternoon on 33 minutes, and Alatimu's conversion cut the deficit to two points.

Jimmy Tupou scored within two minutes of the restart, Alatimu added his own try in the 47th minute, and Cameron Church stretched the lead to 21-43 before the hour mark. Wellington mounted a late fightback — Divad Palu and Riley Williams both crossed in a four-minute spell, Burgess converting each — but Counties Manukau had enough in the tank. Gibson Popoali'i slotted a penalty goal in the 80th minute to seal the 35-46 final score.

Counties Manukau's try on the stroke of half-time — West-Stevens' second — shifted the momentum decisively. Wellington had clawed their way back from 0-7 to lead 21-12 through three unanswered tries, but the Steelers absorbed the pressure and scored twice in the final seven minutes of the half (West-Stevens at 40', Tupou at 42') to take a 21-33 lead they never surrendered. Leo Ngatai-Tafau's yellow card on 27 minutes could have derailed the visitors; instead they conceded only one try (Plummer, 28') during his sin-bin and emerged with a double-digit buffer.

AJ Alatimu (Counties Manukau) — scored a try, set the attacking tempo from fly-half, and converted four of seven attempts. His kicking from the tee was erratic (two hits on the posts), but his game management steered the Steelers through Wellington's best period.

Sione Molia (Counties Manukau) — two tries in the first 33 minutes, both finished with power from close range. His opening score inside two minutes set the tone.

Cameron Burgess (Wellington) — a perfect 5/5 from the tee and one try assist, the full-back was Wellington's most reliable source of points. His cross-field pass created the space for Matsushita's try.

Counties Manukau won the ruck battle convincingly (98 rucks won to Wellington's 113 but with significantly faster ball — 39% of their rucks were cleared within three seconds compared to Wellington's 16%). Wellington enjoyed more possession (62% in the last ten minutes) and territorial advantage but converted only 12 of 22 entries into points. The Steelers' 69% of the game spent in the lead — versus Wellington's 20% — underscores a contest that was rarely in doubt after the opening quarter.
