Tasman struck first through young hooker Eli Oudenryn, who scored in the 16th minute to give the Mako a 5-0 lead after an early territorial advantage. Reihana added a penalty before half-time to stretch the lead to 10-5, and slotted another penalty in the second half to make it 13-5. Tasman stayed within touch through a penalty — cutting the gap to 13-10 — but could not find a second try.

With five minutes remaining and the crowd of approximately 20,000 on edge, Reihana sealed the result. The first-five took the ball into contact close to the Tasman line, drove through a tackle and reached out to ground the ball under the posts. He converted his own try to make it 20-10, and Northland's defence held firm through the closing stages.

Northland's scrum dominance in the second half. After a relatively even first 40 minutes, the Taniwha pack began to assert at set-piece time, winning two crucial scrum penalties inside Tasman's half. Those penalties gave Reihana field position to kick for the corners and eventually build the pressure that led to his match-clinching try. Tasman, missing several first-phase attacking platforms, could not generate the momentum needed to reclaim the lead after falling behind.

The 20-10 scoreline reflects a match defined by defence and set-piece pressure rather than attacking fluency. Northland's points all came from two tries and two penalties — capitalising on Tasman infringements rather than carving open the defence. Reihana's 15-point haul accounted for 75% of Northland's output, underscoring his importance as both goal-kicker and playmaker. Tasman generated a try from their only extended period in Northland's 22 in the first half but struggled to build sustained phases after that, undone by penalties at the breakdown and scrum time.

Northland retain the Ranfurly Shield and improve to 3-1 in the Hilux NPC this season, with their only loss coming in Round 2 at Bay of Plenty. The Taniwha have now won three straight since that defeat — including the historic 36-12 Shield victory over Canterbury in Christchurch and a 42-0 demolition of Taranaki.

Tasman drop to 2-3 after a run of two straight wins was snapped. The Mako remain competitive but have now lost to Hawke's Bay and Northland, two of the stronger sides in the competition.

Northland's defence of the Ranfurly Shield is off to a winning start, but this was a sterner test than the final score suggests. The Taniwha scrum provided the platform to break free in the final quarter, and Reihana's composure under pressure was the difference. Tasman will rue ill-discipline at the set-piece but showed enough to suggest they can trouble the competition's better sides. The real question for Northland is whether their attack can generate tries without relying so heavily on a single player's individual moments.
