Pumas vs Stormers XXIII

The Stormers XXIII began with intent, testing the Pumas under the high ball through scrum-half Stefan Ungerer and captain Jean-Luc du Plessis, but the home defence held firm. Fleurs opened the scoring with a penalty in the 10th minute after a high tackle gave the Pumas field position.

Visiting hopes suffered a blow when Ungerer was forced off with his left arm in a sling — an injury that will concern Stormers director of rugby John Dobson, who has already lost scrum-halves Imad Khan and Dewaldt Duvenhage to pre-season injuries.

That try, however, appeared to jolt the Pumas back into action rather than spark a comeback. Within nine minutes they had secured the bonus point. Replacement hooker Jan-Henning Campher crashed over from a rolling maul in the 57th minute, and lock JJ Scheepers repeated the trick from another driving lineout three minutes later. Fleurs converted both to stretch the lead to 29-7 and effectively end the contest.

Nevaldo Fleurs (Pumas) — Man of the Match. A 100% return from the tee (three conversions, one penalty) and composed game management at fly-half. The 10-point contribution and his tactical kicking kept the Stormers pinned in their own half for long periods.

Thomas Bursey (Pumas) — The scrum-half scored the opening try and provided the quick service that allowed the Pumas backline to stretch the Stormers defence.

Mfundo Ndhlovu (Stormers XXIII) — The Stormers’ brightest attacking threat. His 51st-minute try was a moment of individual quality that briefly threatened a shift in momentum, but he saw too little ball thereafter.

The 29-7 scoreline reflected the balance of play more accurately than the possession stats alone might suggest. The Pumas scored four tries to one, with three of their scores coming from either rolling mauls or clinical backline moves in wide channels where the Stormers defence was caught too narrow. The visitors dominated territory in the opening quarter without points, and once Ungerer departed the scrum-half channel the Pumas exploited that disruption ruthlessly. The Stormers’ error count — particularly knock-ons in midfield — gifted the Pumas both field position and momentum just before half-time.

The bonus-point victory lifted the Pumas (3 wins, 2 losses — 14 points) to fifth on the Currie Cup table, confirming their recovery from back-to-back defeats to open the season with three consecutive wins. The Stormers XXIII (2 wins, 3 losses — 11 points) slip to sixth, with playoff hopes dented after successive defeats.

The Pumas next host defending champions Griquas on Friday 21 August in Nelspruit, while the Stormers XXIII travel to Pretoria to face the Vodacom Bulls XV on the same weekend.

The Pumas were sharper, more clinical and better organised in every facet. The Stormers XXIII showed ambition in the aerial game but lacked the precision to turn pressure into points, and their injury list is a growing concern. Three straight wins have made the Pumas a genuine playoff threat.
