Auckland vs Bay of Plenty

Bay of Plenty started with ferocious intensity. Nikora Broughton crashed over from close range in the fourth minute off a Charlie Sinton assist, and Lucas Cashmore's conversion made it 7-0 inside five minutes. Cole Forbes stretched the lead to 12-0 in the 15th minute with an unconverted try as the Steamers dominated the opening quarter.

Auckland took 28 minutes to respond. Inside centre Tevita Latu finished a sustained period of pressure to cut the deficit to 12-5 at half-time.

The home side flipped the game after the break. Lock Titi Nofoagatotoa powered over from close range in the 44th minute, and Alex Harford's conversion squared the scores at 12-12. Seven minutes later, wing Payton Spencer finished sharply after a line break by full-back Rico Simpson, and Harford's conversion gave Auckland a 19-12 lead with 27 minutes to play — their first advantage of the night.

Bay of Plenty's bench made the difference. With Auckland leading 19-12 and the momentum favouring the hosts, replacement scrum-half Richard Judd entered the match in the 52nd minute alongside hooker Sione Tupou. The substitutions paid off immediately.

In the 68th minute, full-back Cole Forbes carved open the Auckland defence, Tamiro Armstrong drew the last defender, and Judd — fresh from the bench — dotted down under the posts to cut the gap to 19-17. Hohepa, who had replaced Lucas Cashmore at fly-half, slotted the conversion to level the scores at 19-19.

Six minutes later, with Auckland pinned inside their own half, Bay of Plenty won a ruck penalty inside kicking range. Hohepa stepped up and drilled the penalty from in front of the posts to put the Steamers ahead 22-19 with six minutes remaining.

Auckland pushed for a winning score in the closing stages but Bay of Plenty's defence held firm, and referee Stu Curran blew full-time with the visitors celebrating their third win of the campaign.

Riley Hohepa (Bay of Plenty) — Player of the match. The replacement fly-half turned the game. He converted Judd's try to level the scores and calmly slotted the go-ahead penalty in the 74th minute. A match-defining cameo.

Cole Forbes (Bay of Plenty) — Scored the visitors' second try in the 15th minute and created the critical gap for Judd's 68th-minute equaliser from full-back. Constant threat with ball in hand.

Payton Spencer (Auckland) — The wing scored Auckland's third try and looked dangerous in transition, finishing a well-worked Simpson break to give Auckland their only lead.

Tevita Latu (Auckland) — The inside centre provided Auckland's foothold in the game with a well-taken try just before half-time, sparking the home side's second-half revival.

RugbyPass data shows Bay of Plenty had eight entries into Auckland's 22-metre zone to Auckland's five, but the visitors averaged fewer points per entry (2.3 to Auckland's 3.8), reflecting Auckland's superior finishing inside the 22 — until the replacements swung the game. BOP led possession in the final 10 minutes (66% to 34%) and scored three points in that period to Auckland's zero — the decisive window. The Steamers also won the breakdown battle, forcing several critical turnovers in the final stages.

Bay of Plenty move to 17 points from five matches (3W/2L) and climb the NPC ladder after bouncing back from their loss to Canterbury in Round 3. With three of their remaining five fixtures at home, the Steamers remain in touch with the play-off places.

Auckland drop to 1W/4L, rooted in the bottom half of the table. They collected a losing bonus point — their fourth of the season — but have now lost four of their five matches, with the sole win coming against Wellington in Round 2. Auckland next travel to face Counties Manukau on 5 September, while Bay of Plenty host Southland on 4 September.

A game of two halves and two benches. Auckland's forwards dominated the set-piece after the break and flipped a 12-point deficit into a seven-point lead, but Bay of Plenty's reinforcements — Hohepa and Judd in particular — changed the game when it mattered most. For a side with one win in five, Auckland's inability to close out a game they led with 27 minutes to play is a worrying pattern. Bay of Plenty, by contrast, have now won consecutive games and are building momentum at the right time.
