Lokomotiv Penza vs VVA-Podmoskovye

The second half belonged entirely to the home side. Tiaan van der Merwe touched down in the 49th minute, converted by Yanyushkin (26-8). Alexander Gudok added another four minutes later (33-8), and the game was slipping away from VVA.

VVA rallied through Stanislav Shmelev, who scored a brace of tries — in the 55th and 64th minutes, both converted by Kazakov — to cut the deficit to 33-22. But any hope of a comeback was extinguished when Lokomotiv ran in four more tries in the final 12 minutes.

Nasege completed his hat-trick with two tries in quick succession (67th and 72nd minutes) to make it 47-22. Van der Merwe matched him, crossing twice in the closing stages (77th and 79th minutes), with Ilya Kuraev converting the final try to round out a 55-22 rout.

The 49th-minute try by Tiaan van der Merwe, just four minutes into the second half, broke VVA's resistance. Up to that point VVA could still hope to hold the deficit to a single-score margin. Van der Merwe's score — Lokomotiv's fourth — stretched the lead to 18 points (26-8) and triggered a three-try burst in 17 minutes that made the game unsalvageable for the visitors. VVA's discipline unravelled too: Kirill Kuleshov was yellow-carded in the 63rd minute, compounding a growing penalty count that allowed Lokomotiv to play almost entirely in opposition territory.

Lisala Nasege — Player of the Match. The Tonga-raised back-rower scored three tries (26', 67', 72') and was a constant physical presence in the carry game. His second-half double in five minutes put the result beyond doubt.

Tiaan van der Merwe — A hat-trick of his own (49', 77', 79'), with the first try starting the second-half avalanche and the final two adding polish to the scoreline. The South African-born centre finished with three tries from three genuine attacking touches in the second period.

Sergey Yanyushkin — Perfect off the tee with four conversions from four attempts (27', 40', 50', 54'), providing the reliable goal-kicking foundation that kept the scoreboard pressure on VVA.

Alexander Gudok — Scored one try (53') and was the sharpest attacking threat outside the hat-trick scorers, regularly breaking the gain line and creating space on the edges.

The 55-22 scoreline (nine tries to three) tells a story of second-half dominance the raw numbers only hint at. Lokomotiv scored 36 of their 55 points after half-time — a 65% share — against an opposition that managed just 14 second-half points, all from one player (Shmelev's brace). The home side's conversion rate of 5/7 (71% excluding the unconverted tries) is solid but not exceptional; what stands out is the try-scoring volume: nine tries from what was, coming into the round, an attack that had averaged just over 20 points per match. The yellow-card count (one for Lokomotiv, two for VVA) reflects a game that became increasingly one-sided in discipline terms as VVA chased the game.

Coming into Round 10, both sides sat 5th and 6th in the 7-team table with identical 2-6 records from eight matches. This result does not dramatically alter either side's league position, but the manner of the win — the largest margin of the season for Lokomotiv — provides a serious confidence boost ahead of a congested fixture run. Lokomotiv have now won eight of their last ten meetings with VVA (two losses), improving their all-time head-to-head record to 11-6 since 2005.
