South Africa vs Barbarians

South Africa kicked off their 2026 international campaign in breathtaking fashion on Saturday, demolishing the Barbarians 80-31 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha.

Rassie Erasmus' side ran in 12 tries in a merciless attacking display, with Cheslin Kolbe the orchestrator-in-chief, while five uncapped Springboks made their senior debuts in the emphatic season-opening victory.

First-Half Fireworks

The Springboks wasted no time imposing themselves. Edwill van der Merwe crossed inside four minutes, with Kolbe converting for a 7-0 lead. The Barbarians, coached by Scott Robertson and Felipe Contepomi, struck back through Virimi Vakatawa and TJ Perenara, with Tomas Albornoz's boot keeping them in touch at 14-7.

But the Boks' forward pack took control. Pieter-Steph du Toit powered over from close range before Jasper Wiese bullocked through for a third try. Riley Norton, making his senior debut, got on the scoresheet with a well-worked finish, and when Grant Williams was sin-binned, the Barbarians briefly threatened through Franco Molina and Andrew Kellaway.

Cheslin Kolbe then delivered the killer blow just before the interval, dotting down to send the hosts into the break leading 40-26.

Second-Half Onslaught

Aphelele Fassi saw yellow early in the second half, but the Boks barely slowed. JJ Kotze scored from a dominant driving maul before Edwill van der Merwe bagged his second try of the afternoon.

Elliot Dee's sin-binning for the Barbarians proved costly as Faf de Klerk came off the bench to score, swiftly followed by Vusi Simphiwe Moyo, who announced his arrival with a stunning solo effort. Jesse Kriel and Andre Esterhuizen added further gloss to the scoreline before Zachary Porthen capped the scoring late on, Moyo adding the extras.

Andrew Kellaway scored a second try for the Baa-Baas, but the visitors could not contain the relentless Springbok wave.

Key Performers

Cheslin Kolbe was unplayable, contributing tries, conversions, and constant attacking threats. Debutant Quan Horn impressed at flyhalf, while Vusi Moyo's brace off the bench marked a memorable first appearance.

For the Barbarians, TJ Perenara led from the front, and Andrew Kellaway's double showed the attacking quality in the invitational side, but they were overpowered by the World Champions' physicality and depth.
