Argentina U20 vs Ireland U20

Argentina exploded out of the blocks. Wing Luciano Avaca crossed in the second minute and fly-half Federico Serpa converted to make it 7-0 inside three minutes. Serpa then touched down himself in the eighth minute and added the extras for a 14-0 lead.

Ireland steadied. Hooker Rian Handley forced his way over in the 19th minute, with Charlie O'Shea converting. Wing Daniel Ryan crossed in the 30th minute to cut the deficit to 14-12, but it was as close as Ireland would get.

Argentina finished the half emphatically. Serpa landed a penalty before full-back Simón Pfister scored to stretch the lead. A try from flanker Tomás Dande and another from Serpa — his second of the half — sent Los Pumitas into the break leading 31-7.

Ireland's failure to capitalise on their period of ascendancy around the half-hour mark proved costly. Having clawed back from 14-0 to 14-12 through tries from Handley and Ryan, a missed conversion and two quick Argentine scores either side of the 33rd minute swung momentum decisively. From 14-12 Los Pumitas scored 17 unanswered points before half-time, effectively taking the contest beyond reach.

The second half was an extraordinary display of attacking rugby. Argentina extended their lead through Benjamín Ordiz (47'), Avaca's second try (52'), and Santiago Giannantonio (75'), while Serpa added conversions and penalties throughout — finishing with a personal haul of 22 points from two tries, six conversions and a penalty.

Ireland never stopped playing. Centre Jack Deegan (54'), replacement Blake McClean (59') and lock Josh Neill (79') all crossed, with O'Shea landing five conversions and a penalty for a 15-point individual tally. O'Shea also slotted a drop goal in the 67th minute.

Federico Serpa (Argentina U20) — Player of the Match. The fly-half was at the heart of everything, scoring two tries, converting six and landing a penalty for a 22-point contribution. His game management during Argentina's purple patch either side of half-time set the tempo.

Luciano Avaca (Argentina U20) — Two tries from the wing, the first inside two minutes that set the tone for Argentina's fast start.

Charlie O'Shea (Ireland U20) — A bright spark in a losing cause. The fly-half contributed 15 points through five conversions, a penalty and a drop goal, while also orchestrating Ireland's best attacking phases.

Daniel Ryan (Ireland U20) — The winger's first-half try sparked Ireland's brief comeback and his pace troubled the Argentine defence throughout.

With 102 points and 16 tries, this was a match defined by attack rather than defence. Argentina's 11 entries into the Ireland 22 yielded an average of 5.3 points per visit, a ruthlessly efficient strike rate. Ireland managed 8 entries at 4.1 points per visit — respectable but ultimately insufficient.

Argentina dominated the ruck, winning 90 to Ireland's 59, which gave them sustained platform to attack. The 99% of the match Argentina spent in the lead underlines the one-sided nature of the contest after the opening half-hour.

Argentina sit top of Pool C with two wins from two following their 78-14 demolition of USA U20 on 27 June, confirming their place in the semi-finals. They face England U20 on Tuesday 7 July in a likely pool decider.

Ireland, who lost their opening match 34-27 to England, now have two defeats and face a must-win match against USA U20 on 7 July to keep their semi-final hopes alive.

Argentina were simply too powerful and too clinical. Their ability to score from anywhere — ten tries from backs and forwards alike — marks them out as genuine title contenders. Ireland showed admirable fight but defensive frailties that proved fatal against a side of this quality. The pool finale between Argentina and England on 7 July now looms as one of the matches of the tournament.
