Scotland U20 vs Japan U20

Scotland burst out of the blocks. Scrum-half Matthew Fick touched down in the second minute after a slick backline move, and Jake Dalziel converted for a 7-0 lead inside three minutes.

Winger Dan Kelly — the tournament's leading line-breaker — added a second try in the 14th minute, and Dalziel's conversion made it 14-0. Ollie Blyth-Lafferty crashed over from a driving maul three minutes later, and Scotland led 19-0 after 17 minutes.

Japan hit back. Koshi Tsumura burrowed over from close range in the 20th minute, Yuki Kobayashi converted, and the fly-half added a penalty on 29 minutes to cut the deficit to 19-10.

Joe Roberts — Scotland's captain — restored the cushion with a try from a lineout drive in the 32nd minute (Dalziel con, 26-10), but Japan loosehead Sota Miura responded with a try of his own at the other end. The score stayed 26-15 until half-time, with Blyth-Lafferty shown a yellow card just before the break.

Jamie McAughtrie extended Scotland's lead five minutes into the second half, finishing from close range (31-15). But Japan's response was emphatic.

Shinnosuke Uchida sliced through from 30 metres out in the 57th minute, Isa Fukada added a second quick-fire try after a flowing multi-phase move, and Kobayashi converted both to bring Japan to within two points at 31-29 with 15 minutes to play.

Scotland steadied. Replacement Alex Bryden crossed in the 72nd minute after a clever offload from Asa Stewart-Harris, and Dalziel's conversion made it 36-29. Kobayashi landed a penalty on 75 minutes to make it 36-32, setting up a grandstand finish.

The decisive moment came in the 78th minute. Japan, pressing for a try that would have given them their first-ever pool-stage win, threw a pass into midfield that Jake Dalziel read perfectly. The fly-half plucked the interception and sprinted 50 metres to score under the posts, then converted his own try to make it 43-32.

Japan had all the momentum after clawing back from 31-15 to 31-29, and Kobayashi's penalty cut the gap to four points with five minutes left. But Dalziel's intercept try — a moment of individual brilliance born from pressure — flipped the game decisively. It was Scotland's seventh try, securing a bonus point and snuffing out Japan's best chance of a historic result.

Jake Dalziel (Scotland U20) — Player of the Match. One try, four conversions, and a game-clinching intercept. The Glasgow Warriors-bound fly-half controlled the tempo and stepped up when Scotland needed him most.

Dan Kelly (Scotland U20) — The Edinburgh Rugby winger continued his tournament-leading line-break tally. His early try set the tone and his pace stretched Japan's defence throughout.

Yuki Kobayashi (Japan U20) — Landed four conversions and two penalties for 14 points. His composure under the posts kept Japan in touch, and his tactical kicking pinned Scotland deep in the second half.

Shinnosuke Uchida (Japan U20) — A try and a try assist from the bench. The replacement's 30-metre solo score was the highlight of Japan's comeback.

Scotland's 43 points came from seven tries, four of which were converted, reflecting a willingness to attack from deep. Japan's 32 points included four tries, three conversions and two penalties — a balanced return that undersells how close they came.

The match swung on two extended periods: Scotland's opening 17-minute blitz (three tries, 19-0) and Japan's second-half surge (14 unanswered points in eight minutes). The 11-point margin flattered Scotland slightly — Japan spent extended periods in the Scotland 22 and had the try line in sight before Dalziel's interception.

Scotland finish third in Pool B with six points from three games (W2 L1), behind Pool B winners New Zealand (10 points) and Italy (7 points). They will enter the 5th-8th place play-offs.

Japan finish bottom of Pool B with zero points, extending their winless run in Junior World Championship pool-stage matches to 21 games since the tournament's inception. They will contest the 9th-12th place classification matches.

Scotland's next fixture is a 5th-8th place semi-final on 11 July. Japan's next is a 9th-12th place semi-final on the same date. Both venues in Tbilisi and Kutaisi are to be confirmed.

A game of two storms. Scotland's early blitz would have buried a lesser side, but Japan's refusal to fold — and their 14-point comeback — was the story of the match until Dalziel's moment of genius. Scotland get the win and the bonus point, but Japan exit the pool stage with more credit than their 0-3 record suggests.
