What Is HT/FT Combo Stats Analysis?

Half-time/full-time combo stats analysis examines how frequently a team's half-time result (home win, draw, or away win) translates into each possible full-time outcome. By recording the count of matches in each of the nine possible HT→FT combinations — and expressing them as percentages — bettors can identify patterns that are invisible from simple win/loss records.

This analysis matters because the HT/FT betting market prices combinations based on average league frequencies. When a specific team deviates significantly from the average — for example, being far more likely to overturn a half-time deficit than a typical team — that deviation can represent genuine betting value.

How to Use the HT/FT Combo Stats Calculator

  1. Select Home or Away using the tab at the top. Teams often show very different HT/FT patterns at home versus away, so analysing them separately is important.

  2. Enter match counts for each of the nine HT→FT combinations. For each row (the half-time result), fill in how many matches ended with each full-time result. For example, if a team was drawing at half-time in 12 home matches — and 4 ended as a home win, 5 as a draw, and 3 as an away win — enter 4, 5, 3 in the Draw row.

  3. Click Calculate to generate the 3×3 percentage matrix showing the probability of each full-time outcome conditional on the half-time result.

  4. Interpret the matrix. Each cell shows the percentage of matches where a given HT result led to a specific FT result, plus the raw match count. Cells with higher percentages are highlighted in blue — darker blue indicates stronger concentration.

Understanding the 3×3 HT/FT Matrix

The matrix has three rows (HT Home Win, HT Draw, HT Away Win) and three columns (FT Home Win, FT Draw, FT Away Win). Each row sums to 100% and shows only what happened after that specific half-time result.

HT Result Meaning
Home Win Home team leading at half-time
Draw Scores level at half-time
Away Win Away team leading at half-time

Typical league averages (as a general benchmark across major European leagues):

  • HT Home Win → FT Home Win: ~80%
  • HT Home Win → FT Draw: ~14%
  • HT Home Win → FT Away Win: ~6%
  • HT Draw → FT Home Win: ~36%
  • HT Draw → FT Draw: ~38%
  • HT Draw → FT Away Win: ~26%
  • HT Away Win → FT Home Win: ~16%
  • HT Away Win → FT Draw: ~20%
  • HT Away Win → FT Away Win: ~64%

A team that leads at HT and wins only 65% of the time (versus the ~80% average) is significantly worse at holding leads and may offer value on HT/FT upset combinations.

What Patterns to Look For

Teams that hold leads reliably: When a team leads at HT, an unusually high HT Home Win → FT Home Win percentage (e.g., 90%+) indicates a team that defends leads well. This makes HT/FT Home/Home bets more reliable for that team.

Teams that blow leads frequently: A low HT Home Win → FT Home Win percentage (e.g., below 70%) combined with high HT Home Win → FT Draw or FT Away Win suggests a team prone to capitulation. These teams can offer value on draw or away comeback combinations.

Draw specialists: Teams with high HT Draw → FT Draw percentages are tactically conservative — they tend to play out draws when level at the break. This can offer value in HT/FT Draw/Draw markets.

Comeback specialists: Teams with unusually high HT Away Win → FT Home Win percentages for home matches are teams that are dangerous when chasing a goal — they may offer value in HT/FT Away/Home combinations.

Away-team patterns: Away teams often show notably different behaviour than their home stats suggest. A team that is well-drilled on the road may show a much higher HT Away Win → FT Away Win percentage than average, making their away HT/FT Away/Away combinations attractive.

Combining HT/FT Stats with Other Indicators

HT/FT frequency data is most powerful when combined with other information:

Tactical context: Teams that change formation at half-time more frequently — bringing on attacking substitutes or shifting shape — may show more volatile HT→FT conversion rates. If a manager is known for second-half adjustments, the data becomes even more predictive.

Squad depth: Teams with deeper benches can make effective second-half substitutions. Clubs in multiple competitions with larger squads can maintain intensity and may be more consistent at holding leads.

Goal timing: Some teams score most of their goals in specific phases of the match (e.g., 60–90 minutes). These teams may show higher comeback rates from HT deficits, but only for home fixtures where they have the tactical freedom to push forward.

Motivation factors: Teams in mid-table with nothing to play for may show different HT/FT patterns late in the season compared to teams fighting relegation or pushing for European qualification.

Data Requirements and Limitations

This calculator works with match count data that you enter manually. You can source this data from:

  • Free football data repositories (e.g., football-data.co.uk)
  • Commercial data providers with historical match records
  • Manual records from match databases or statistics sites

Sample size warning: With fewer than 20 matches in any row, treat percentages with caution — small samples can produce misleading extremes. At least two full seasons of data (50–70 matches) gives more robust patterns for teams playing regularly in one league.

Historical data disclaimer: All statistics shown are based on historical match records and are provided for informational purposes only. Past HT/FT frequencies do not guarantee future results. Always gamble responsibly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a HT/FT combo bet? A half-time/full-time combination bet requires you to correctly predict both the result at half-time and the result at the end of the match. There are nine possible outcomes and the odds reflect the rarity of each combination.

Why do teams sometimes fail to hold a half-time lead? Tactical adjustments, fatigue, opposition substitutions, and psychological pressure can all contribute. Teams that sit deep and invite pressure after going ahead are more vulnerable than teams that continue pressing.

How many matches do I need for reliable statistics? A minimum of 20–30 matches per HT result category is recommended. Season-long totals are a reasonable starting point; multi-season data is more robust.

Is a large difference between home and away HT/FT patterns significant? Yes. Many teams show very different patterns at home versus away, reflecting different tactical approaches. These divergences are often the most actionable findings from this analysis.

How do I get historical match data? You can source it from free datasets such as football-data.co.uk, commercial statistics providers, or manual tallying from match databases.
