Brazil — Volleyball

Brazil is one of the most successful volleyball nations in history, with a record that rivals any country in the sport. The Superliga Women, the Superliga, features 24 clubs across 2 competitions and is one of the strongest domestic volleyball leagues in the world.

Volleyball is the second most popular sport in Brazil after football, with massive television audiences and passionate fans. Brazil has produced generations of world-class players and has been a dominant force in both men's and women's volleyball for decades.

Volleyball arrived in Brazil in 1911, and the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation was founded in 1954. The sport grew enormously in popularity from the 1980s onwards, fuelled by international success.

Brazil's men's team won their first Olympic gold at Barcelona 1992, followed by gold at Athens 2004 and a historic triumph at Rio 2016 in front of a home crowd. The team also won three World Championship titles (2002, 2006, 2010). The women's team has been equally successful, winning Olympic gold in 2008 and 2012 and multiple World Grand Prix titles. Legends like Giba, Serginho, Jaqueline, and Sheilla are household names in Brazil.

The Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (Confederacao Brasileira de Voleibol, CBV) governs volleyball in Brazil. Founded in 1954, it is a member of the CSV and FIVB, overseeing one of the world's largest and most successful volleyball programmes.

The Superliga is the top division of volleyball in Brazil and one of the strongest club leagues in the world. The Copa Brasil provides additional knockout competition. The Superliga attracts top international talent and features clubs with massive followings, including Minas, Sesc-RJ, and Sada Cruzeiro.

Brazil has won three men's Olympic gold medals (1992, 2004, 2016), three World Championship titles (2002, 2006, 2010), and numerous World League/Nations League titles. The women's team has won two Olympic gold medals (2008, 2012) and two World Championship titles. Brazil's combined record in men's and women's volleyball makes it arguably the most successful volleyball nation in history.
