Romania was once a competitive volleyball nation, and the sport continues to maintain a domestic structure, though it has not matched its historical achievements in recent decades.

The Romanian Volleyball Federation was founded in 1931. The sport flourished during the communist era with state support, and Romania achieved its best World Championship finish at 4th place in 1956.

Romania competed at the 1980 Moscow Olympics in volleyball. Since the transition era, Romanian volleyball has faced challenges but maintains an organised domestic competition.

The Romanian Volleyball Federation (Federatia Romana de Volei, FRV) governs volleyball in Romania. Founded in 1931, it is a member of the CEV and FIVB.
