Player of the Match: Ekaterina Antropova (Italy)

Canada actually out-killed Italy 71-66 in attack points, illustrating how close the contest was in open play. But Italy's edge in blocks (14-8) and, crucially, errors (Canada committed 28 to Italy's 20) flipped the outcome. The following day, Canada beat the Dominican Republic 3-1 to secure qualification for the VNL Finals for the first time in the women's team's history. They finished the preliminary phase in fifth place with eight wins and 24 points.

Italy ended the preliminary phase second in the standings with ten wins and 28 points, behind only the United States (10 wins, 29 points). They advanced to the VNL Finals in Macao (22-28 July), where they faced the Netherlands in the quarter-finals.

Canada's quarter-final opponent was Türkiye.

"Tonight we are sad because we know we could have won against Italy," Canada head coach Giovanni Guidetti said. "This is a great step forward for our team. We played point-to-point in four incredible sets against the best team in the world and we were very close to winning the match."

Canada proved it can trade blows with the world's best, matching Italy's attack output across four tight sets. But the gap in composure during decisive moments — and Italy's ability to raise its block and reduce errors when it mattered most — separated the two sides. Antropova's 37-point tour de force was the individual difference, but the collective lesson for Canada is that the gap to the top is narrowing. The VNL Finals in Macao offer a chance to measure that progress.
