Bulgaria vs Iran

With the momentum behind them, Bulgaria asserted their dominance from the first whistle in the second set. A towering block by Asparuh Asparuhov and Alex Grozdanov handed the Lions a 2-0 lead, and a ferocious diagonal attack from Martin Atanasov stretched the advantage to 3-1. Iran's attacking errors began to mount as Bulgaria's blocking wall grew ever more imposing.

Setter Simeon Nikolov orchestrated the offense with composure, feeding Aleksandar Nikolov and Grozdanov in equal measure. At 13-9, a trademark Nikolov block forced Iran coach Roberto Piazza into a timeout, but the respite changed nothing. A triple Bulgarian block sealed the set at 25-19, putting the Lions two sets to the good.

The third set began evenly, with Iran refusing to go quietly. But Bulgaria's superior chemistry at the net gradually told. Grozdanov combined with Simeon Nikolov for a sharp 9-8 lead, and a remarkable defensive dig from Aleksandar Nikolov — who showed his all-court value — turned defence into attack for a 17-16 advantage.

In the defining moments, Aleksandar Nikolov stepped up once more: a thunderous counter-attack made it 20-18, and an ace stretched the lead to 22-19. Iliya Petkov drilled a middle attack to bring up match point at 24-21, and Martin Atanasov finished the job with the final blow — 25-21.

Bulgaria's double-digit advantage in attack (+12) and blocking (+5) proved decisive. While Iran actually scored more from Bulgarian errors (26 to 21) and had slightly better reception numbers, they simply could not match the Lions' firepower at the net.

Aleksandar Nikolov (Bulgaria) — 24 points The star outside hitter was in a league of his own. His ability to find the floor from seemingly impossible angles, combined with timely blocks and a match-sealing ace, underlined his status as one of the most exciting talents in world volleyball.

Alex Grozdanov (Bulgaria) — 11 points The middle blocker formed an impenetrable partnership with Petkov in the centre, contributing heavily to Bulgaria's 10-block tally and providing a reliable target in transition.

Amin Pouriya & Ali Hajipour (Iran) — 11 points each The Iranian duo carried the offensive load for their side, but lacked the necessary support from the rest of the roster to challenge Bulgaria's disciplined defence.

This victory carried extra significance beyond the three points in the pool table. Iran had eliminated Bulgaria from VNL Finals contention in Gdańsk last summer with a 3-0 win, making Thursday's result a measure of payback. The win lifted Bulgaria to 9th in the FIVB world rankings with 259.43 points, while Iran dropped to 18th.

For Blengini's squad, it represents a crucial foundation upon which to build after a slow start to the tournament. The Lions showed character, composure, and — most encouragingly — a level of attacking efficiency that will trouble every opponent they face in Week 1 and beyond.

Bulgaria continue their Pool 2 campaign in Brasília with matches against Argentina (13 June) and Serbia (14 June). Iran, still searching for their first win of VNL 2026, face Argentina on 12 June before meeting Belgium on 14 June.
