Canada vs France

Xander Ketrzynski was the standout player of the night, topping all scorers with a match-high 20 points including three blocks. The Canadian opposite was unstoppable in crunch moments, delivering when it mattered most in the tight fourth set.

Eric Loeppky added 18 points (two blocks) from the outside, while captain Stephen Maar chipped in with 12 points and the composure to close out the match. Middle blockers Jackson Howe (10 points, four blocks) and Danny Demyanenko (10 points, three blocks) anchored a ferocious defence. Setter Luke Herr also contributed three blocks as part of a team-wide blocking clinic.

For France, opposite Stephen Boyer led the way with a team-high 19 points. Young outside Mathis Henno impressed with 16 points and two service aces, showing glimpses of why he is considered one of the brightest talents in European volleyball.

Canada dominated at the net, outblocking France 15-7 — the single biggest edge in the match. The home side also led in attack points (58-53) and committed fewer errors (22-24). France had the advantage from the service line, firing six aces to Canada's one, but it was not enough to overcome Canada's superiority in the rallies.

The victory was worth 12.14 FIVB World Ranking points, catapulting Canada three places up to world No. 8, overtaking Germany, Bulgaria and Argentina. France, meanwhile, slipped one spot to No. 5 behind the United States.

In the VNL table, Canada improved to 1-1 with four points, climbing to fifth place in the early standings. France also sit at 1-1 but with only two points, dropping to 13th after their opening five-set win over world champions Italy cost them points differential.

"I'm obviously super grateful. We have a lot of skills that we have been working on and were able to put those on display tonight," said Canada's Stephen Maar. "We were able to sit with it down the stretch and go point by point with a really strong, technical team. And I'm glad we were able to outlast them. The performance yesterday wasn't what anyone wanted, but with a crowd like this, it's easy to find the motivation to get back at it."

Canada have a day off on Friday before facing the United States on Saturday in what promises to be another stern test. France will look to bounce back when they take on Germany in their next pool fixture. With the VNL still in its early stages, both sides have plenty of time to build momentum toward the Finals in August.
