Japan vs Poland

Poland, the defending VNL champions and world No.1, showed exactly why they sit atop the rankings. Head coach Nikola Grbić's side cranked up the serving pressure, with Wilfredo Leon's jump serves forcing Japan into reception errors. Bartosz Kurek, playing in his sixth VNL campaign, began finding his range from the right side, while middle blocker Mateusz Bieniek controlled the net with two solo blocks.

The Poles levelled at 1-1 with a 25-21 win, punishing Japanese transition errors and imposing their physicality at the net.

The third set was a masterclass in Japanese defensive organisation. Libero Tomohiro Yamamoto covered the court brilliantly, extending rallies well beyond Poland's comfort zone. Yuji Nishida, the explosive opposite hitter, lit up the scoreboard with a string of vicious cross-court spikes, ending the set with a powerful down-the-line winner to seal it 25-21.

Japan's blocking unit — featuring Kentaro Takahashi and Taishi Onodera — began reading Poland's attacks more effectively, frustrating Kurek and forcing Grbić into an early timeout.

Poland refused to fold. Outside hitter Aleksander Śliwka stepped up with crucial contributions from the left pin, while substitute middle Jakub Kochanowski injected fresh energy. The Poles battled back from a 20-18 deficit, with Leon hammering two aces in succession to swing the momentum.

A net touch violation on Japan handed Poland set point, and Kurek emphatically converted 25-22 to force a decider.

The tiebreak was everything a five-set classic should be. Japan jumped ahead 5-3 through a string of composed attacks from Takahashi, but Poland clawed back to 8-7 at the switch. The teams traded points deep into the set, with neither side able to open a two-point gap.

At 14-13 to Poland, Ishikawa powered down a kill from the left to save match point. Then, with the score at 14-14, Nishida hammered a back-row attack that the Polish defence could only parry into the net. On Japan's first match point, Takahashi rose high for a block on Kurek's spike attempt, touching it just enough to send it looping out of reach. The ball hit the floor. Linyi erupted. Japan 15-14.

The fifth set was decided by the finest of margins. Poland had match point at 14-13 when Leon's float serve forced a loose Japanese pass, but Ishikawa showed ice-cool composure to terminate out of system. From there, Nishida's raw power and Takahashi's block-touch sealed one of the most memorable VNL pool-stage victories in recent history.

Yuji Nishida was electric throughout, leading all scorers with a match-high points tally from a mix of powerful spikes, jump serves and timely blocks. His ability to score from difficult positions gave Japan an outlet whenever Poland's block closed in.

The win moved Japan to 2-0 in Pool 3 after their opening straight-sets victory over Ukraine, while Poland dropped to 1-1 following their sweep of Cuba on opening day. The result also narrowed Poland's historical head-to-head lead, now 14-3 in Japan's favour across all competitions.

For Japan, this victory represents a significant statement of intent. After falling to Poland in the VNL 2025 quarterfinals (0-3), Philippe Blain's side demonstrated clear growth in composure, particularly in closing out high-pressure moments against the world's top-ranked team.

Poland, despite the loss, showed their trademark depth — with contributions from across the roster — and will look to rebound quickly as the group stage continues.

Both teams remain in Linyi for the rest of Week 1. Japan face China on Saturday, while Poland take on Slovenia in another heavyweight clash that could shape the early standings in Pool 3.
