Slovenia came out with purpose, racing through the first set in ruthless fashion. After the emotional high of their upset win over reigning champions Poland two days earlier, there was no sign of a letdown. The Slovenian block stood tall, limiting Cuba's explosive outside hitters to just a handful of clean kills. Set 2 — Slovenia 26-28 Cuba

Cuba refused to fold. The second set became an arm-wrestle that swung deep into overtime. Trailing late, the Cubans dug in behind their powerful serving game, forcing Slovenian reception errors at crucial moments. A missed match-point chance for Slovenia at 26-25 proved costly — Cuba clawed back, levelled, and stole the set 28-26 on their second opportunity to level the match at 1-1.

Set 3 — Slovenia 19-25 Cuba

The Caribbean momentum carried into the third set. Cuba's athletic front row began finding rhythm, with their wing spikers punishing the Slovenian block. The set remained tight through the midpoint, but Cuba pulled away in the closing stages, taking it 25-19 to grab a 2-1 lead — their first advantage of the afternoon.

Set 4 — Slovenia 25-14 Cuba

Whatever head coach Fabio Soli said between sets worked. Slovenia produced their most dominant spell of the match, storming through the fourth set 25-14. The Slovenian service line applied relentless pressure, forcing Cuba into chaotic transition play. Jan Kozamernik's blocking at the net was a particular standout, snuffing out Cuban attacks before they could develop. Slovenia levelled the match at 2-2 with emphatic authority.

Set 5 — Slovenia 15-11 Cuba

The decider followed the pattern of the week for Slovenia — another tie-break after their 19-17 nail-biter against Poland. This time, Slovenia seized the initiative early. A 4-0 run mid-set gave them breathing room, and although Cuba battled back to close within two at 11-9, Slovenia's setter Uros Planinsic orchestrated clinical side-out phases to close the door. A block on the Cuban outside sealed the set 15-11 and the match 3-2.

Nik Mujanovic continued his sensational VNL campaign. After dropping 37 points on Poland two days earlier, the 21-year-old opposite delivered another match-high scoring performance, albeit with less gaudy numbers as Cuba's block adjusted. His ability to score in transition remained Slovenia's primary offensive weapon.

Klemen Sen provided crucial support from the outside hitter position, finishing with a well-rounded attacking line. Jan Kozamernik anchored the middle with several critical blocks in the fourth set that shifted the match's momentum.

For Cuba, Alejandro Miguel Gonzalez led the offensive charge, particularly in the second and third sets where his powerful swings troubled Slovenia's defence. However, Cuba's error count ballooned in the fourth set — a pattern that has plagued them across all three matches this week.

Slovenia sit on a 2-1 win-loss record heading into their final fixture of Week 1 against Japan on Sunday. Cuba (0-3) will look to salvage some points when they face China in Saturday's later match before taking on Germany to close out their Linyi campaign.

"The energy we showed today was incredible," Mujanovic told VBTV after the match. "We knew Cuba would fight. They always do. But we kept believing and found a way to win the big points when it mattered."

Slovenia's adaptability has been the story of their week: a five-set loss to China on opening day, followed by a stunning upset of world No. 1 Poland, and now another tie-break victory over a hungry Cuban side. Fabio Soli's team have proven they can win ugly — and that resilience could prove vital as the VNL preliminary phase continues.
