Bulgaria vs Argentina

The South Americans drew first blood in a scrappy first set that saw both teams struggle to establish a consistent rhythm. Argentina's blocking game proved decisive early on, with the middle pairing regularly shutting down Bulgaria's primary attack options. Bulgaria fought back from 18–20 down to level at 22–22, but a decisive spike from Argentina's outside hitter and a missed serve from the Bulgarian side handed the opening set to the Albiceleste 25–23.

Bulgaria responded with renewed intensity in the second set. Aleksandar Nikolov, the 22-year-old opposite hitter who torched Iran for 24 points two days earlier, began to find his range. His heavy swings from the right side drew consistent blockers from Argentina, creating space for middle hitter Aleks Grozdanov to operate. The set followed a similar pattern to the first — tight, back-and-forth, no more than two points separating the sides — but this time Bulgaria held their nerve. A solo block from Nikolov at 24–23 sealed the set and brought the match level at 1–1.

The third set was the turning point. Blengini's men came out firing on all cylinders, with Nikolov and Asparuh Asparuhov combining for a string of brutal kills down the wings. Bulgaria's serving game forced Argentina into repeated reception errors, allowing the Europeans to build an early 8–3 lead. By the technical timeout, the gap had grown to 16–8. Argentina coach Marcelo Méndez rotated his squad in search of answers, but Bulgaria's block-defence structure was impenetrable. A thunderous spike from Nikolov closed the set at 25–15 — Bulgaria's most dominant period of the week.

Argentina showed their pedigree in the fourth set. Trailing 2–1 in sets, the Argentines stormed to a 10–6 lead behind improved passing and quick sets from their veteran setter. Bulgaria looked momentarily rattled, but Blengini's timeout at 13–10 steadied the ship. Simeon Nikolov, the younger Nikolov brother who orchestrates Bulgaria's offence from the setter position, found his timing and began feeding Grozdanov and Asparuhov on quick attacks. The deficit slowly evaporated. At 20–20, the sides traded points in a tense finish. Slovenia-born Bulgarian star Aleksandar Nikolov stepped up once more, converting a difficult out-of-system ball to reach match point at 24–23, and Argentina's final attack sailed long to confirm Bulgaria's 3–1 victory.

Nikolov finished as the match's leading scorer once again, following up his 24-point display against Iran with another comprehensive offensive performance. His ability to score from high sets in transition and draw double-blocks gave his hitters ample one-on-one opportunities.

Bulgaria opened their VNL 2026 campaign with a surprise 3–1 loss to Belgium on June 10, before rebounding with a straight-sets win over Iran on June 12. This victory over Argentina moves them to 2–2 in Pool 2. Argentina, meanwhile, have struggled in Brasília, falling to 1–3 after previously losing to Serbia and Iran.

The win is particularly significant for Bulgaria under Italian coach Gianlorenzo Blengini, who was appointed to rebuild the team after a disappointing 2025 campaign. The Nikov brothers — Aleksandar (opposite) and Simeon (setter) — have formed the backbone of this Bulgarian resurgence, providing both firepower and tactical control.

The rivalry now stands at 12–9 in Argentina's favour from 21 meetings dating back to 2011. However, Bulgaria have now won two of the last three encounters, including a 3–0 sweep in last year's VNL.

Bulgaria close their Week 1 campaign against Serbia on June 14 before the tournament moves to Week 2. Argentina will look to bounce back in their final Pool 2 match against hosts Brazil.
