Slovenia vs Canada

Slovenia edged the opening set 25-23 in a tight exchange characterised by sharp serving and efficient first-touch passing. Neither side led by more than three points at any stage, but Slovenia’s ability to win the decisive rallies gave them the early advantage.

Canada responded well in the second set, levelling the match at 1-1 with a 25-23 win of their own. The Canadian side found more rhythm in attack, capitalising on Slovenian service errors to keep the scoreboard pressure even.

The match swung decisively in the third set. Slovenia came out with renewed defensive intensity, building a multi-point cushion that Canada could not fully erase. A 25-20 scoreline put the hosts ahead 2-1 and brought the home crowd into full voice.

In the fourth set, Canada refused to fade. They pushed Slovenia to 22-22 before a late surge — powered by solid blocking and a key kill down the stretch — saw the Slovenians close it out 25-22, sealing the 3-1 victory.

The third set was the hinge. After Canada had levelled in set two, Slovenia needed to reassert control. They did so by winning the first five points of the set, forcing Canada to play catch-up from the outset. Slovenia’s block touched more Canadian attacks in that set, slowing down what had been an effective offence in the second. Once ahead 2-1, Slovenia never allowed Canada back to parity in the match.

Nik Mujanović (Slovenia) — The Slovenian opposite continued his outstanding VNL form. Mujanović, who scored 37 points against Poland in Week 1, was again the primary offensive outlet, delivering heavy diagonals from the right side and contributing key points in the tight fourth set. He entered this match as Slovenia’s leading scorer in the tournament.

Tonček Štern (Slovenia) — The veteran opposite provided stability from the service line and in transition. His leadership in the decisive phases of sets one and four was evident.

Stephen Maar (Canada) — Canada’s captain and outside hitter carried much of the offensive load. Maar consistently found ways through the Slovenian block and was the primary reason the second set went Canada’s way.

Arthur Szwarc (Canada) — The Canadian opposite chipped in with crucial points, particularly in the middle phase of the match, keeping Canada within striking distance.

The set scores — all decided by three points or fewer except the third — show a match where small margins separated the sides. Slovenia’s 25-20 third set was their most comfortable, but the other three sets were effectively one-possession games past the 20-point mark. Slovenia’s blocking and serving in the clutch moments — late in sets one and four — made the difference. Canada’s sideout percentage in the second set was their best of the night, but they could not replicate it consistently across four sets.

Slovenia opened Week 2 with a vital win in front of their home crowd at Stožice Arena. After finishing Week 1 with a 1-3 record (the win coming in a five-set upset of defending champions Poland), this result lifts Slovenia to 2-3 in the standings and gives them momentum ahead of further Pool 6 matches against Bulgaria (25 June), Brazil (27 June) and Italy (28 June).

Canada, who entered Week 2 with a 3-5 record and in 14th place, slip to 3-6. They will face the USA, Iran and Bulgaria in their remaining Ljubljana fixtures. With only the top eight advancing to the VNL Final Round, every result carries weight for both sides.

Slovenia deserved the win on the balance of play across four sets, but Canada pushed them harder than the 3-1 scoreline suggests. The hosts’ ability to win the key rallies — particularly from 22-22 in the fourth set — was the difference between a routine home win and a potential tie-break. Canada will rue missed opportunities but showed enough to suggest they can be competitive in the remainder of Week 2.
