Iran led 28-27 in the third set and had a clear chance to extend the match. But USA's front line produced back-to-back blocks to flip the score to 29-28. Iran saved one match point, but a missed serve at 29-29 handed USA the decisive advantage. That sequence — two stuff blocks followed by an Iranian service error — swung a set Iran had controlled since 20-18.

USA's outside hitters carried the load. The American opposite attacker delivered critical kills in the third-set surge, while the middle-blocker tandem recorded multiple solo blocks in the decisive phase of the third set. For Iran, opposite Morteza Sharifi kept his side alive in the third set with powerful swings from the right side, but Iran's service errors at key moments (including one at 29-29 in set three) proved costly.

The set scores — 25-23, 25-20, 31-29 — reveal two distinct phases. USA dominated sets one and two through superior sideout efficiency. The third set, with 60 combined points, showed Iran could match USA's firepower when they limited errors. The gap came down to execution in the clutch: Iran had three set points but failed to convert any, while USA converted their second match point.

USA's six points from two Week 2 matches (3-0 vs Cuba on 24 June, 3-0 vs Iran) puts them joint-top of the preliminary standings early in Week 2, with a 6-1 set ratio. Iran, meanwhile, dropped to 1-2 on the week after a five-set loss to France on 24 June and this sweep.

USA (2-0 in Week 2, undefeated overall in VNL 2026) strengthened their push for a top-eight finish that would qualify them for the VNL Finals in late July. The Americans face Serbia next in Week 2.

Iran (1-2 in Week 2 after losses to France and USA) will need results in their remaining Week 2 fixtures against Japan (26 June) and Cuba (28 June) to stay in contention for a finals spot.
